Softball Closes Second Day in SC with Extra-Inning Win

SHORT STORY: Offense and defense combined to get the Great Danes an extra-inning win over Ball State to split their second day in South Carolina, Saturday.
 
GAME ONE

KEY STATS
  • Senior Lové Drumgole led the team with two RBIs.
  • Graduate student Katie Falotico went 3-3 at the plate, notching two doubles for an RBI and a run.
  • Three pitchers combined for six strikeouts; freshman Amelia Freitas led with three strikeouts in 2.0 innings.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Penguins jumped to a 6-0 lead before the end of the third inning.
  • Drumgole added two runs for the Great Danes with a left-field single, driving in freshman Christie Collins and junior Morgan Petty.
  • Youngstown State extended their lead by three runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
  • UAlbany tallied three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
    • Falotico notched her RBI with a double.
    • Sophomore Maddi Petrella hit a single to drive in Falotico.
    • Running for Petrella, sophomore Lex Frederick stole home for the Great Danes' fifth run.
  • The Penguins closed out the 10-5 win with a final run in the seventh inning.

KEY STATS
  • Junior Wendi Hammond pitched her first complete game of the season, tallying seven strikeouts in eight innings.
  • Morgan Petty led the team with two hits, going 2-3. The junior notched her second home run of the season.
  • Sophomore Caitlyn Frederick and Petty earned an RBI each.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hammond struck out the first Cardinal batter to open the contest.
  • The pitcher followed with two strikeouts in the second and another in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
  • After a scoreless first five innings, Petty hit the ball outside of left field to tally the first run of the game.
  • The Cardinals followed with their own homer in the top of the seventh.
  • After the Great Danes were unable to score a second run, the game headed into an eighth inning.
  • Taking advantage of the international tiebreaker rule, Ball State tallied a run with two sacrifice hits - a bunt and a fly.
  • UAlbany answered right away when C. Frederick opened the bottom of the eighth with a double for her RBI.
  • Junior Caitlyn Mitros hit a sacrifice bunt to advance C. Frederick to third before Petty and Falotico walked.
  • As the bases were loaded and two outs were on the board, C. Frederick took advantage of one slight moment to steal home and win the game for the Great Danes.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will close the weekend against Robert Morris on Sunday at 10 am.
