Strong Performance Not Enough for Men’s Basketball Against Loyola Chicago

Short Story: The University at Albany men's basketball team battled hard against the A-10's Loyola Chicago on Sunday afternoon but fell by a score of 68-56. After building a lead in the early minutes, the Ramblers were able to maintain a 10-point lead throughout much of a back-and-forth game. Malik Edmead led the team in scoring with 16 points, his best game in a UAlbany uniform.

  • Loyola scored the first eight points of the game before a layup from Sarju Patel broke the scoring run. The Ramblers took a 10-4 lead into the first media TO.
  • The Ramblers increased the lead to 10 by the U12 TO, 18-8. The Great Danes started 4-11 from the field and 0-3 from beyond the arc.  
  • The scoreboard read 26-15 by the U8 TO. Jonathan Beagle led UAlbany scorers with eight points, including a two-handed slam that energized the Great Dane bench.
  • The Ramblers brought a 37-28 lead into the locker room at halftime. Malik Edmead hit a floater in the final minute to bring the score back within single digits.
  • UAlbany shot 45.8% (11-24) from the field and 33.3% (3-9) from deep in the first half. Loyola Chicago shot 58.3% (14-24) from the field and 37.5% (3-8) from three.
  • 22 of Loyola's 37 first-half points came from I the paint.
  • The lead remained at nine points by the first media TO of the second half, 39-30. UAlbany had two made free throws from Trey Hutcheson but started the half by going 0-6 from the field.

  • UAlbany called TO with 8:37 remaining, down 53-44. Both teams started to warm up, with UAlbany hitting four of its last eight shots and Loyola Chicago hitting six of its last nine.
  • The Great Danes were unable to overcome the deficit, trailing by 10 once again in aback-and-forth contest with 3:32 remaining, 59-49. Both teams went on a stretch of going just 1-7 from the field over a span of four minutes.
  • UAlbany shot 26.7% (8-30) from the field and 22.2% (2-9) from three in the second half. Loyola shot 41.7% (10-24) from the field and 37.5% (3-8) from three.
