Last Time Out
UAlbany faced two local schools, Skidmore and Saint Rose, in exhibition play to start the year. The Great Danes defeated Skidmore on Nov. 1 by a score of 71-69 before defeating Saint Rose days later, 73-66
Against Skidmore, The Great Danes played their first ever game at the McDonough Sports Complex on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College – the site of this year's home contests as SEFCU Arena undergoes renovations.
Da'Kquan Davis led all scorers with 20 points, going 6-17 from the field.
Gerald Drumgoole Jr. paced the Great Danes with eight rebounds, seven of which came off the defensive boards. Skidmore took a 32-30 lead into the locker room at halftime before the Great Danes came back in the second half, outscoring their opponent 41-37.
Against Saint Rose, Davis once again led the Great Danes in scoring with another 20-point performance, shooting 7-14 from the field.
Sarju Patel followed with 14 points, going 3-10 from beyond the arc.
Scouting Towson
Towson is coming off of a dominant season in which the team went 25-9 overall and 15-3 in conference play. The year ended on a low note for the Tigers however, getting bounced by Delaware in the CAA tournament followed by a quick exit in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) at the hands of Wake Forest. This season, the Tigers were chosen first in the CAA poll – receiving 12 of the 13 first place votes, as coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team. Towson also placed three on the All-CAA Preseason First Team with Nicolas Timberlake, Charles Thompson, and Cam Holden earning the distinction.
Timberlake was the leading scorer a year ago, averaging 14.4 ppg and 4.4 rpg plus shooting just under 50 percent from the floor. For his efforts, he earned All-CAA First Team honors. Timberlake scored double digits in 27 of the 34 games in 2021-22. Cam Holden averaged 13.5 ppg and a team best 7.9 rpg last season, earning him not only All-CAA First Team honors but also a spot on the NABC Division I All-District 10 Team. Holden had a stretch of eight straight games with double digit points including a season-best 25 points against Pitt in November. Thompson was named the All-CAA Second Team and was also named to the NABC Division I All-District 10 Team last season after averaging 10.8 ppg and 6.7 rpg, having started every game for the Tigers. He finished the season with five double-doubles and 20 double figure scoring games.
Last Time Against Towson
This is the second-straight season the Tigers and the Great Danes open up their seasons against each other. Last year, Towson visited the Campus of UALbany to kick off the season on Nov. 9. The Tigers earned the win in that game by a final score of 77-56 in Coach
Dwayne Killings' first ever game as the bench boss. In that game:
- De'Vondre Perry led the team with 11 points, four rebounds, one assist and one block.
- Matt Cerruti led the Great Danes in time on the court with 32 minutes. He finished with seven points and three rebounds
- All available student-athletes for UAlbany found their way onto the court throughout the game, with 11 recording points.
- Ny'Mire Little was a spark off the bench, playing 21 minutes and going 3-8 from the field.
Scouting Immaculata
The Mighty Macs were voted tied for fifth overall in the 2022-23 Atlantic East Conference men's basketball coaches' poll. Last season, the team went 8-19 overall with a 4-8 mark in conference play. The Mighty Macs ended their 2021-22 campaign with a win in the Atlantic East Tournament over Cabrini before being bounced by top-seed Marymount. Tyler Tillery is Immaculata's top returning player, having averaged 11.2 ppg and 6.6 rpg while shooting .463 from the field and .563 from beyond the arc.
#AEHoops Notes
Coming off winning it's league-best ninth men's basketball title, Vermont is the favorite in the 2022-23 America East Men's Basketball preseason poll. The Catamounts, who also claimed their league-record sixth-straight regular-season title last season, edged out league newcomer Bryant atop the poll. Vermont and Bryant combined to claim four of the six preseason All-Conference team members, which was also unveiled with the poll.
Binghamton's Jacob Falko is the lone returning first-team All-America East team member from last season on the preseason All-League squad. He is joined by UMass Lowell's Max Brooks along with Bryant's Charles Pride, a first-team all-NEC choice last year, and Earl Timberlake, as well as Vermont's Dylan Penn and Finn Sullivan.
