How it Happened
- Before Tuesday's game, Vermont improved to #8 in the latest United Soccer Coaches national poll, moving up from #20 last week after defeating #21 New Hampshire 2-1. This week's ranking was a new high-water mark for the Catamounts, who were ranked #10 before sliding to #20 after suffering a defeat at UMBC two weeks ago.
- In the 17th minute, UAlbany nearly took a 1-0 lead. Elias Ehlin served the ball from the right sideline to the far post, finding Giuliano Lucca who hit it back to the middle with his head. No one was there, but Domenic Baumann broke towards the ball and ripped a shot one-touch that missed just wide of the near post.
- In the 25th minute, Vermont held the ball in UAlbany's defensive zone. Mujtaba Mirhasas ripped a shot from the top right corner of the box heading towards the middle of the goal. Great Danes' goalkeeper Shafique Wilson was tracking the shot until Max Murray got a head on it inside the six. Wilson made a kick save, only to see the ball ricochet back to Murray. Murray's second shot fell into Wilson's hands to end the Catamounts' opportunity.
- The first half ended with the score locked at zero. Vermont held a small advantage in shots taken, 4-2, and had controlled 52% of possession in the first 45 minutes.
- Wilson kept his clean sheet intact off a solid attempt from Vermont's Yaniv Bazini in the 58th minute. Banini's low shot cleared the Great Danes' wall through to Wilson's left. Wilson dived to his left to deflect the ball away from the Great Danes' ball and out of bounds on the far sideline.
- The second half saw a total of five yellow cards distributed between the two teams, and a total of 17 fouls called. The game tightened as the clock wound down, but neither team was able to break through the other's defense and time expired with the score still 0-0.
- The tie clinches the three-seed in the America East Tournament for the Great Danes for the second-straight season. Their opponent will be NJIT, also for the second-straight season. Vermont earns a bye into the semifinals as the two-seed. New Hampshire wins the regular season for the fourth-straight year.Â
Next: UAlbany has clinched the three-seed in the 2022 America East Tournament and will face six-seed NJIT in the quarterfinal round on November 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
