Volleyball Takes Down Cornell, Wright Named All-Tournament

UAlbany beats the Big Red for the first time in program history.

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes came from behind to take the Big Red, 3-1, in the program's first-ever win against Cornell to close the Crowne Plaza Albany - The Desmond Hotel Volleyball Classic.
 
Senior Regan Wright was named to the All-Tournament Team.
 
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "We had a great finish to our home tournament. The team did a great job staying focused on their pre-match goals. Cornell is very scrappy and made us work for every point. We are looking forward to another week of practice and traveling outside of our region."
 
KEY STATS
  • Freshman Oren Abutbul led the team with 16 kills and finished second on the match with seven block assists.
  • Junior setter Malea Stanton tallied 25 of the team's 50 total assists. Freshman Elaina Wamhoff followed with 20.
  • Freshman Anissia Wong stuck to the net for eight successful block assists.
  • Senior Charlotte Macken once again led the defense with 20 digs.
  • On the serve, Macken and freshman Lilou Stegeman tallied two aces each while the team totaled seven service aces.
  • All-Tournament Team member, Regan Wright, owned the court on both defense and offense. The senior collected 12 kills, 10 digs, one service ace, and one assist.
  • The Great Danes outhit the Big Red, .233-.187.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UAlbany opened the match with a kill from Oren Abutbul before earning a 6-3 lead in the first set.
  • Cornell was able to take the lead with its eighth point eventually earning a 15-9 edge.
  • After a couple of point runs by the Great Danes, the score was tied 20-20 but the Big Red finished the first set with the win.
  • Once again, UAlbany earned the first point of the set. After going back and forth for much of the beginning of the second set, the Great Danes earned an 11-8 lead. 
  • Cornell put a point on the board but that didn't stop UAlbany from earning six straight points for a 17-9 lead.
  • Holding their large point margin until 21-15, the Big Red caught up and almost tied the score but the Great Danes finished out the set for a 25-21 set win to tie the match.
  • Cornell earned the first point of set three. The third set was similar to the second but it was the Big Red earning the early lead, eventually holding a 16-11 edge. 
  • UAlbany did not give up and came back with a couple of points here and there to tie the score at 21. While the Big Red did earn two more points, the Great Danes hit 25 first for the third set win.
  • Set four began back and forth but UAlbany hit an early five-point run to gain an 8-5 lead.
  • After more back and forth points and another Great Dane five-point run, the Purple and Gold held a 21-19 edge.
  • Cornell took the lead 22-21 with three straight points, but with five plays and four Great Dane points, UAlbany took the set and the match with a service ace from Charlotte Macken
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will head to Texas for the Texas A&M Invitational on September 10-11. UAlbany will play against UTSA, Houston, and Texas A&M.
