SHORT STORY: After taking the first two sets, Marist gave UAlbany a fight for the final two sets with the Great Danes pulling away at the end of the fourth set for the 3-1 win.

COACH JOSH PICKARD: "Our team battled tonight. Marist has some tough players who made us work to defend and pass. I'm proud of us stepping up and finishing the match. They had the momentum and it would have been easy to ease up. It's a great match for us in a midweek situation."

  • Seniors Regan Wright (12) and Charlotte Macken (11) led the team on defense with double-digit digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UAlbany started the first set hot. After Marist started with a 2-1 lead, the Great Danes went on a six-point run for the 7-2 lead.
  • The Red Foxes were able to climb back to a one-point difference with a score of 15-14, UAlbany ahead, but two three-point runs and a couple of points scattered throughout, and the Great Danes took the first set win.
  • The second set started a bit more even than the first. The Great Danes gained a significant lead by scoring two or three points for every Red Fox tally. The first time Marist put together two points in a row, the score was 13-9, UAlbany, following its two-point run.
  • The Red Foxes continued to put together two points at a time but it wasn't enough to overcome the lead the Great Danes had already created and UAlbany took the second set, 25-18.
  • Marist quickly took the lead during the third set. Starting with a 3-0 UAlbany lead, the Red Foxes completed a five-point run to gain the lead. Though the Great Danes would tie the score multiple times early on, Marist never gave up the lead and took the third set, 25-19.
  • The fourth set was neck-and-neck until the last couple of points. For the majority of the set, neither team held a lead of more than one point.
  • Starting with a 14-13 score (Marist lead), the Great Danes went on a five-point run to take an 18-14 edge. The Red Foxes were unable to catch up and UAlbany finished the match with a three-point run including two kills (Tedesco and Stegeman) and a service ace (Stegeman).

NEXT: The Great Danes will host their first tournament of the season, the Crowne Plaza Albany - The Desmond Hotel Volleyball Classic, on Friday (Sept. 3) and Saturday (Sept. 4).
