Second Half Surge Propels Men’s Soccer Over Hartford 2-1

Short Story: Second half goals from Adam Aoumaich and Andrew Weiner propel the Great Danes to a 2-1 season-finale victory over Hartford. 

Coach Trevor Gorman: "We're pleased with the result today. The team surged well in the second half and created a lot of chances. On another day we could have killed the game off earlier but it's a positive step and response to last week."

How it Happened
  • Hartford started the game with a quick opportunity less than two minutes in when Nadav Datner took a shot that missed high. The teams then engaged in a back-and-forth game with minimal offensive pressure for 15 minutes.
  • Austin DaSilva took the Great Danes' first shot at 17:32 that was blocked. UAlbany gained some momentum with the ball on the Hartford side of the field but could not create threatening chances. 
  • The Hawks turned the momentum with a shot that missed high at 25:11. Hartford followed six minutes later with the game's first shot on goal. 
  • On a dangerous opportunity from the six-yard box, Datner produced a shot on goal that was saved by Michael Kennedy. The save caused the ball to go just wide, as the Great Danes escaped the situation with a goal kick. 
  • At 37:10, Hartford's Rasmus Karlsson head a ball of a corner kick that hit the crossbar. The chance was the final of the half for either team as they entered halftime tied 0-0.
  • The teams were engaged in a slow beginning to the second half, with no shot attempts until Hartford's JovanteEtienne head a ball that missed high off a corner at 58:01. Bjarki Ragnar took UAlbany's first shot at 59:16 that missed high of the goal.
  • At 62:36, the Great Danes struck first when Adam Aoumaich scored on a ball from DaSilva that gave UAlbany a 1-0 lead. The goal was Aoumaich's team-leading fourth of the season.
  • After UAlbany's tie-breaking goal, Aoumaich produced another shot that was saved. Hartford countered with a shot that Kennedy turned aside. At 72:30, UAlbany produced two quality chances in one-and-a-half minutes that both barely missed the goal. The stretch started a flurry of shots, as Hartford and UAlbany both took one on goal 42 seconds apart. 
  • At 80:24, UAlbany's Andrew Weiner scored his first goal of the season to give UAlbany a 2-0 lead. Josh Pope earned his first assists of the season on the tally in the 81st minute. 
  • The Hawks responded with a goal at 85:05 when Etienne finished a chance set up by Datner that cut UAlbany's lead to 2-1. DaSilva and Aoumaich were both able to produce shots in the final five minutes and the Great Danes were able to block the Hawks' only chance. 
  • With Hartford unable to tie the game, UAlbany took a 2-1 victory in the final game of the season. Goals from Aoumaich and Weiner helped the Great Danes seal their second conference victory of the 2020-21 season.
