Quick Start Not Enough as Softball Falls to Syracuse

Location: Albany Field in Albany, N.Y.

Short Story: The University at Albany softball team got off to a quick start against New York State rival Syracuse on Tuesday afternoon, but fell to the Orange 10-6. The Great Danes took an early 2-0 lead to start the game, but errors in the field proved to be the difference maker with only two of Syracuse's runs being earned. Tuesday's action saw just one game, with the originally planned doubleheader being cut to one matchup at the beginning of the week.

Coach Chris Cannata: "We took a step backward today as we gave them too many free passes and made too many errors. We continue to have good at bats and score runs, but we need to take better care of the ball in order to win games."

Key Stats:
  • Briana Garrett started in the circle for UAlbany. The junior from California saw six runs cross the plate in just 1.2 innings of work, but none were earned. Garrett finished with two strikeouts.
  • Wendi Hammond tossed the rest of the game for UAlbany. Hammond saw four runs cross the plate in 5.1 innings of work, with just two being earned. The sophomore fanned five batters and walked three.
  • Madison Petrella had a big day at the plate, driving in three runs on three different at bats. She finished with two hits, including a monster homerun deep over the left field fence.
  • Chloe Lewis joined Petrella in the homerun club, sending a solo shot deep in the second inning.
  • Morgan Petty and Kelly Barkevich also collected RBIs for UAlbany. Both players finished with one hit, with Petty also adding two runs.
  • Eight different Great Danes notched a hit in the game.
How it Happened:
  • UAlbany wasted no time, with the first two batters (Phillips and Falotico) hitting singles to start the game. Petrella would drive in the first run of the game on an RBI single up the middle to score Phillips, followed by Barkevich driving one to right field to score Falotico.
  • Syracuse rebounded in the top of the second, however, scoring six unearned runs to jump ahead. Woods walked to drive in a run, followed by a bases-clearing double from Jasso to put the Orange up 4-2. Casares then singled to increase the lead to three runs and Mayfield singled for the final RBI of the inning.
  • Lewis started the bottom half of the second with a bang for UAlbany, sending a homerun over the left field fence.
  • Syracuse added three in the third. Woods doubled to center to drive in Barnes and Casares singled to center to drive in Jasso, with Woods advancing home on an error.
  • Petrella collected another RBI in the third, grounding out to the pitcher but scoring Petty.
  • Syracuse collected the team's 10th run of the afternoon in the fifth, with Jasso reaching on an error.
  • Petrella nailed down her third RBI of the game in the sixth after sending a ball deep over the right field fence for a solo homerun.
  • The final run of the game came off the bat of Petty, grounding out to the Syracuse pitcher in the seventh to score Drumgole.
