Short Story: The Great Danes drop their first conference game of the season 2-0 against Monmouth in a windy and rainy afternoon home game.

Coach Phil Sykes: "Despite the weather, both teams gave a quality effort but it was a tough one to lose today. I liked the effort and enthusiasm we showed but we have to get on the board when we get opportunities."

  • Katie MacCallum and Hanna Zarrilli each took a shot on goal for the Great Danes
  • Monmouth outshot UAlbany 4-3 and 4-1 in shots on goal, as well as 3-2 in corners

How it Happened
  • In a slow-paced first quarter, opposite of the game UAlbany played against UC Davis three days prior, the Great Danes created the only offensive stat with one penalty corner opportunity.
  • At 18:45 in the second quarter, Monmouth scored the game's first goal. Aylin Aufenacker finished a goal set up by Ireen Frenken that gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead on their second shot of the game. UAlbany created its dangerous chance when Cosima Rocktaeschel fired a shot on goal off a penalty corner that was saved.
  • In the third, Monmouth scored another goal, this time finishing a penalty corner set-up. Julianna Carletti stopped the pass perfectly for Frenken who fired the ball past Sheridan Messier and gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
  • UAlbany was unable to cut into the 2-0 deficit and dropped its first conference game of the season to Monmouth.
Next: UAlbany will return to the field against UMass Lowell on Saturday, April 3 at 12:00 p.m. after a game against UMass on Tuesday, March 30 was canceled.
