SHORT STORY: The Great Danes gained the lead late in the first quarter and continued to advance to tally their first road win of the season.
COACH COLLEEN MULLEN: "I am proud of the effort our team showed tonight. Colgate is a tough team, and we were able to control the tempo of the game with our pressure. We were focused on the defensive end and showed patience offensively. I am happy with the way our team maintained our composure and executed down the stretch."
KEY STATS
- Sophomore Kayla Cooper led the team with 17 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks.
- Senior Lucia Decortes tied Cooper's team-high with seven rebounds. Decortes followed Cooper with 10 points.
- Decortes led the Great Danes with five defensive rebounds while Cooper led with three offensive rebounds.
- Freshman Lilly Phillips led UAlbany with a 66.7% shooting rate (4-6) from the field while junior Helene Haegerstrand went 3-6 from outside the arc.
- Phillips also led in transition with three steals. Senior Ellen Hahne and junior Grace Heeps followed with two each.
- Hahne totaled four assists to lead the team.
- The Great Danes held the Raiders to single-digit points in both the third (7) and fourth (9) quarters.
- For the third game of the season, every student-athlete on the 13-person roster saw time on the court.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Great Danes earned the first basket of the afternoon but the Raiders quickly took an early lead.
- Helene Haegerstrand tallied the team's first three-pointer of the contest to give UAlbany an 11-10 lead with just over four minutes to go in the first quarter.
- After three scoreless minutes, Colgate answered but the first quarter closed with a 14-12 Great Dane advantage.
- The Raiders came back from the quick break strong, earning four-straight points but UAlbany turned the game around after tallying an 11-0 scoring run through the middle five minutes of the second quarter.
- Colgate compiled a 7-3 scoring run to close out the half but the Great Danes held a 28-23 lead during the break.
- Haegerstrand opened the second half with a good three-pointer.
- After letting Colgate earn a successful layup with 8:26 on the third-quarter clock, UAlbany held the Raiders scoreless for over five minutes, taking a 39-25 advantage with three minutes left in the quarter.
- The Raiders attempted to come back before the close of the quarter but the Great Danes completed three baskets for a 46-30 lead after 30 minutes of play.
- For the first half of the fourth quarter, play remained back-and-forth.
- Following the media timeout just after the five-minute mark, the Great Danes tallied a 7-0 scoring run to take the game, 60-39.
NEXT: The Great Danes will continue on the road, taking UAlbany basketball to Tennessee to face Vanderbilt on Wednesday.
