Head Coach Trevor Gorman: "It's always gut-wrenching to lose in the playoffs.  Our guys gave absolutely everything tonight.  We created some great chances and played with passion, heart, and desire. I'm proud of all of them.  A special thanks to the seniors who led this group to a 10-win season and third-place America East finish.  They were great representatives all the way to the end."

How it Happened
  • In the 40th minute, Austin DaSilva had a shot blocked from the top of the NJIT box.  The ball rebounded to Sam Philip, who's ensuing shot missed just high over the crossbar after catching NJIT goalkeeper Samuel Reisgys on his heels after DaSilva's attempt.
  • NJIT broke through in the 43rd minute when Alejandro Rabell settled a loose ball just beyond the UAlbany box.  He took a few touches, cut, and ripped a shot from deep past UAlbany goalkeeper Carlos Tofern to put the Highlanders up 1-0.
  • In the 44th minute, Haflidi Sigurdarson drew a foul in NJIT's box and the Great Danes were awarded a penalty kick.  Bjarki Leosson stepped up to take the attempt and smoothly beat Reisgys to tie the game at one.  It was Leosson's first goal of the season.
  • NJIT retook the lead in the 58th minute when Tomas Jorge served a ball in to Goncalo Franco, who redirected the serve with his head and into the back of the net, giving the Highlanders a 2-1 lead.
  • In the 71st minute Tofern recorded one of his four saves during the game.  A shot from the top of the UAlbany box was zeroing-in on the top right corner of the Great Danes' goal.  Tofern dived to his left and punched the ball away and out of danger, preserving the 2-1 score and keeping his team in the game.
  • The Great Danes upped the intensity as time wound down, sending everyone, Tofern included, into the NJIT defensive zone looking for the equalizer.  Despite the pressure the NJIT defense held, limiting UAlbany to just one shot after halftime, and none in the final moments.  The Highlanders went on to win by a final score of 2-1, and handing UAlbany its first defeat at Casey Stadium this season.
  • UAlbany controlled 55% of possession during the game, but only managed seven total shots to NJIT's 14, with the Highlanders outshooting the Great Danes 5-1 after halftime.  Tofern finished with four total saves, two in each half.
Next: UAlbany's season has come to an end.  NJIT advances to face two-seed Vermont in the America East semifinal round on November 10.
