SHORT STORY: The Great Danes jumped to early leads in all three sets to take the victory, 3-0, at Stony Brook, Friday night.
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "I'm very happy with our effort tonight. We excelled on both offense and defense. Delaney [Foerster] had an excellent match and I'm proud of how she stepped up. We always have a great match with Stony Brook; going into their gym and getting a win is a nice accomplishment."
KEY STATS
- Graduate student Danielle Tedesco led the team with eight kills, a .667 hitting percentage, and three blocks.
- Freshman Oren Abutbul followed with eight kills and two blocks.
- New to the starting lineup, freshman Delaney Foerster followed Abutbul and Tedesco with seven kills from 15 attempts for a team-runner-up .467 hitting percentage.
- Junior Malea Stanton led with 27 assists. The setter also tallied two blocks, including a solo block, and eight digs.
- Senior Charlotte Macken compiled a team-high nine digs.
- As a team, UAlbany totaled nine service aces. Freshman Ellie Benedict led with four, seniors Anna Chalupa and Regan Wright followed with three and two, respectively.
- Overall, the Great Danes hit .234 with UAlbany hitting .281 in both the second and third sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Beginning with a kill from freshman Lilou Stegeman, the Great Danes jumped to a 6-2 lead in the first set.
- Stony Brook brought it within one after a four-point scoring run before tying the set at 11.
- UAlbany tallied four straight points before going on an eight-point scoring run to take a 23-13 lead. The Great Danes finished off the set, 25-16.
- Once again, UAlbany jumped to an early lead, 5-2.
- The Seawolves caught up before taking a one-point lead, 6-5.
- The Great Danes went on to earn an 11-7 lead. The rest of the set saw back-and-forth points before UAlbany took their second set win, 25-22.
- The third set saw a Stony Break early lead, 3-2.
- UAlbany went on a 6-1 scoring run to take the lead back, 7-4.
- After earning a couple of short scoring runs, Stegeman closed the match like she opened it, with a kill for the 25-18 set win and 3-0 match win.
NEXT: The Great Danes will continue on the road playing this year's tournament host, UMBC, on Sunday, November 7.
