ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany volleyball team heads on the road for two matches this weekend.
 
Masks will be required inside all buildings on campus.

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany opened their home slate with the Crowne Plaza Albany - The Desmond Hotel Volleyball Classic on September 3. The Great Danes closed the tournament defeating Cornell, 3-1 on Sept. 4. 
  • UAlbany opened their season with a 1-2 record at the Syracuse Tournament (Aug. 27-28), defeating UB (Aug. 28), 3-0, for their first win of the season, before beating Marist, 3-1, on Tuesday (Aug. 31). 
  • The Great Danes traveled to Texas for the Texas A&M Invitational (Sept. 10-11) and competed in the Jayhawk Classic hosted by the University of Kansas (Sept. 17-18).
  • Closing out their non-conference season, UAlbany hosted Siena for a 3-0 match in the first-ever School Supplies Night (Sept. 22). 
  • The Great Danes began America East play with a 3-2 loss at Binghamton (Sept. 26).
  • UAlbany won their next three conference games, defeating Hartford for a 3-0 victory on October 8 and taking a 3-1 win at NJIT on October 10 after beating Stony Brook (10/3). 
  • Before defeating Hartford for a second time on October 17, the Great Danes fell at New Hampshire in five sets (Oct. 15).
  • Most recently, UAlbany defeated NJIT in three sets on October 29 and New Hampshire in five sets on October 31.  
  • Freshman Oren Abutbul leads the Great Danes offense with 246 kills and 2.67 kills per set.
  • Junior Malea Stanton and freshman Elaina Wamhoff serve as the team's main setters. Stanton leads with 573 assists and 6.23 assists/set. Wamhoff follows with 334 assists and 4.23 assists/set. Stanton is also second on the team with 19 service aces and 181 digs.
  • Senior Charlotte Macken owns a team-high on both offense and defense. She leads with 33 service aces, 385 digs, and 4.14 digs per set. 
  • Freshman Lilou Stegeman leads the blockers with 79.0 total blocks while freshman Anissia Wong has a team-high seven solo blocks.
  • Other Great Dane standouts include graduate student Danielle Tedesco (first on the team with a .309 hitting percentage and second on the team with 213 kills), senior Grace Cozad (second on the team with 2.65 kills per set), and senior Regan Wright (third on the team with 174 digs and second with 2.07 digs per set).
 
ABOUT STONY BROOK
  • The Seawolves completed the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 6-8 record. 
  • Stony Brook went 0-3 at the Florida Atlantic Tournament (Aug. 27-28) before going 2-1 at the Towson Tournament (Sept. 3-4), the Stony Brook Invitational (Sept. 10-11), and the Maryland Tournament (Sept. 17-18). 
  • The Seawolves played two individual matches against Hofstra (Sept. 7) and St. John's (Sept. 14) for two losses.
  • Stony Brook opened the conference season at UMBC with a 3-1 loss before splitting the second weekend, beating Binghamton (Oct. 1) and falling to UAlbany (Oct. 3).
  • The Seawolves continued with five wins - New Hampshire (Oct. 8), NJIT (Oct. 15), Binghamton (Oct. 17), and Hartford (Oct. 22, Oct. 31) - and one loss - New Hampshire (Oct. 24).
  • Each of Stony Brook's last five matches have finished in three sets.
  • Leoni Kunz leads the team with 237 kills while Amiyah De'Long holds the lead with 3.18 kills/set.
  • Torri Henry serves as the main setter, totaling 817 assists on the season. She also holds a team-high 34 service aces.
  • On defense, Kiani Kerstetter leads with 279 digs and Abby Campbell leads the blockers with 64 total blocks, including a team-high 10 solo blocks.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE SEAWOLVES
  • The Great Danes lead the all-time series, 40-17.
  • Most recently, UAlbany took Stony Brook in a three-set victory on October 3. Danielle Tedesco led with 14 points from eight kills and seven blocks, as well as totaling a team-high two service aces.
  • In the second meeting of the 2020-21 season, the Great Danes fell at home on March 22. 
  • Prior to the late-season meeting, UAlbany held a four-match win streak including all three matches throughout the 2019 season. 
  • Against Stony Brook, the Great Danes' longest win streak lasted 12 straight games from 2007-2012.
  • The first game of the 2020-21 season saw a 3-2 win on March 21. Kamara Kelly (17), Regan Wright (15), and Danielle Tedesco (13) led the team in kills while Charlotte Macken led with 19 digs. Other standouts included Malea Stanton (29 assists, 16 digs) and ShaLi Niu (4 blocks).
 
ABOUT UMBC
  • The Retrievers traveled to Florida to play in the FGCU Tournament, finishing with an 0-4 record against FGCU (8/27), South Florida (8/28), Rutgers (8/28), and Miami (8/29).
  • UMBC played at the Cowtown Classic (Sept. 2-3), capturing a win against UT Rio Grande Valley and two losses, Nicholls St and TCU, to round out their trip to Texas.
  • The Retrievers were bested in four sets in a Sept. 7 match against American University.
  • UMBC played at the Charm City Challenge Presented by Sir Speedy, Sept. 10-11, and the Mountaineer Invitational, Sept. 16-17, winning 2 of 3 matches at both tournaments. 
  • The Retrievers opened America East conference play against Stony Brook on Sept. 25, winning 3-1.
  • The Retrievers are undefeated in America East play after 10 consecutive in-conference games to clinch the right to host the America East Championship Tournament. UMBC has played New Hampshire (10/1, 10/10), Hartford (10/3, 10/29), NJIT (10/8, 10/17), Binghamton (10/15, 10/24), and UAlbany (10/22) for its conference victories. 
  • UMBC has two conference games left in the season - UAlbany (11/7) and Stony Brook (11/12).
  • Mia Bilusic leads the team with 300 kills for a 3.49 kills per set average.
  • Andjelija Draskovic is the team's main setter with 603 assists and a 9.42 assist per set average.
  • On defense, Loren Teter leads the team with 423 digs, for a 4.70 digs per set average, while Beste Ayhan leads with 115 blocks, including a team-high 14 solo blocks. Ayhan also leads the team with 29 service aces.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE RETRIEVERS
  • The Great Danes lead the all-time series, 34-10, winning their first matchup in 2002.
  • Most recently, UAlbany fell in four sets as UMBC took the victory on October 22. Regan Wright led the team with 15 kills while Malea Stanton had 34 assists. On defense, Lilou Stegeman tallied seven blocks and Charlotte Macken compiled 16 digs.
  • UAlbany's longest win streak against the Retrievers totals 13 games. It began with a five-set win on November 4, 2007, and finished after a four-set loss on November 2, 2012.
  • Their last matchup of 2020-21 was the America East Championship game which resulted in a loss for UAlbany after five sets.
 
AROUND THE AMERICA EAST
  • UMBC remains as the sole undefeated team in the America East with a 10-0 record. The Retrievers will host the America East Championship Tournament.
  • Stony Brook and UAlbany are tied for second with a 6-3 record.
  • New Hampshire rounds out the top four with a 6-4 conference record.
  • Binghamton currently sits in fifth with a 3-6 record while Hartford is in sixth with a 2-7 conference record.
  • NJIT is looking for their first conference win with 10 losses.

WHAT'S UP, PRESEASON
  • The Great Dane volleyball team was picked to finish first in the conference in the preseason coaches' poll. UMBC and New Hampshire were voted into a tie for second place.
  • UAlbany added seven new players to the roster for the 2021 season.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Great Danes will return home to close the regular season against Binghamton on November 12.
