SHORT STORY: In a very close contest, consisting of 11 lead changes and five ties, the Great Danes fell in the final second at Cornell after the Big Red tallied a buzzer-beating three-pointer, Wednesday afternoon.
COACH COLLEEN MULLEN: "Although the game didn't go our way, I'm proud of the way the team competed in the second half. Cornell did a great job of controlling the tempo, and we allowed their pressure to affect our execution down the stretch. We will make some adjustments and get ready for Boston College this weekend."
KEY STATS
- Senior Lucia Decortes led the team with a 71.4 shooting percentage from the field (5-7) and eight rebounds, including five from the offensive glass. The forward also tallied a team-high three steals and one block with 12 points.
- Junior Helene Haegerstrand shot 4-7 (57.1%) from outside the arc and 6-12 (50%) from the field to lead the Great Danes with 16 points against the Big Red.
- Sophomore Kayla Cooper tied Decortes to lead the team with eight rebounds. The guard compiled a team-high five defensive rebounds.
- Four Great Danes tallied a block - Decortes, Hahne, Cooper, and senior Ellen Hahne - and four completed a steal - Hahne, Cooper, freshman Freja Werth, and redshirt-sophomore Morgan Haney.
- As a team, UAlbany made 40% of its shots from outside the arc and 35.4% from the field. The Great Danes totaled 40 rebounds, including 16 offensive rebounds.
- Eleven players from the 13-person roster saw time against the Big Red.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Great Danes opened the game with an 11-0 scoring run started by a layup from Lucia Decortes.
- Helene Haegerstrand went 3-3 from outside the arc in the first quarter, tallying two three-pointers during the 11-point run.
- Freshman Lilly Phillips broke the first quarter's 11-11 tie with a three-pointer before the Great Danes closed the quarter with a 19-15 lead.
- Throughout the second quarter, Cornell outshot UAlbany to earn a two-point lead, 26-24, headed into halftime.
- On their first possession of the second half, Phillips tied the score with a driving layup before Kayla Cooper made a free throw to take a 27-26 lead for the Great Danes.
- The third quarter saw four lead changes with the largest score differential coming from a 29-26 lead for UAlbany.
- The Big Red closed the quarter with a 36-34 lead after both Cornell and UAlbany tallied 10 points in the third.
- Growing on the competition of the third quarter, the fourth quarter saw six lead changes starting with the Great Danes taking a 39-38 lead in the fourth minute after Decortes made a successful layup.
- About halfway through the quarter, for two minutes, the teams traded jumpers to continue changing the leading university.
- Haegerstrand went for her fourth three-pointer to give UAlbany a two-point lead with nine seconds on the clock but the Big Red went for a buzzer-beater to take the one-point win, 47-46.
