Short Story: After a slow start, the University at Albany men's basketball team came storming back against La Salle on Saturday night, but dropped the contest 64-67. The Great Danes out-played the Explorers in the second frame, but were unable to overcome struggles from the first half.
Key Stat Lines
- Four Great Danes finished in double figures. De'Vondre Perry led the way with 18 points, followed by Jamel Horton and Matt Cerruti with 13 each and Trey Hutcheson with 11.
- Horton let the team with four assists. He added five steals and two rebounds.
- Hutcheson was a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc. Along with his 11 points, he finished with three rebounds, a steal, and an assist – also going a perfect 2-2 from the charity stripe.
- Justin Neely was a rebounding machine for UAlbany, leading the team with six in 22 minutes of play.
- 11 different Great Danes spent time on the court, all totaling at least three minutes of play.
- The team shot just 36.4% in the first half, but came out strong in the second half- shooting 53.8% from the field (14-26) and 71.4% from deep (5-7).
- For the game, UAlbany shot 45.8% from the field compared to La Salle's 48.9%.
Coach Dwayne Killings: "Today was a tough loss, I thought we right there. I think our kids grew a lot since the first game of the season. I think we did some good things during the course of the game, but then we had some costly mistakes. It's a tough loss, but a good learning opportunity."
How it Happened:
- The Great Danes struggled to rebound the ball and made nine fouls as La Salle gave themselves a 12-point lead early in the first half. The Explorers led by as many as 1 before the break.
- The team finished the first half down 36-23, trailing 13 heading into the locker room.
- At the half, La Salle had generated 21 points off of turnovers compared to UAlbany's six. The Explorers also took advantage of scoring from the paint, out-doing the Great Danes 20 points to just 10.
- UAlbany fought hard in the second half and cut the lead to just three points with a second remaining thanks to a three from Jamel Horton. The lone second was not enough thought, with the Great Danes falling 64-67.
- UAlbany turned the corner in the second half, connecting on 53.8% of their shots from the field and going 5-7 from three. The Great Danes notched 12 points off of turnovers (La Salle had only two) and scored 16 in the paint (La Salle was limited to just 10).
- Jamel Horton wound up scoring 12 of his 13 points in the second frame.
