Into set one, Nina Holmes took UAlbany to a 4-0 run and a 4-2 advantage. Each side exchanged a 3-0 run, with UAlbany adding another pair of points to make it 10-7. Kills from Taylor Robinson and Tatiana Tiangco countered Emily Costello kills to make it 12-10 UAlbany. Stony Brook rallied to lead 17-16. UAlbany tied the set, but Stony Brook took eight of the final 11 points, including five Costello kills, to take game one 25-20.
Kills from five different UAlbany players helped the Great Danes get an 11-4 lead, inducing both Stony Brook timeouts. At 12-5, Stony Brook put together an 8-1 streak to tie the set at 13-13. The teams went back and forth, with Tiangco and Robinson getting kills to counter those by McKyla Brooks. At 21-21, SBU got the final four points, capped by a Brooks kill, to win 25-21.
Down 5-1 early, Holmes again had a big serving rally, using kills from Danielle Tedesco, Akuabata Okenwa and Chloe Evering to take a 6-5 lead. At 10-9, SBU took the next five to go up 14-10, later 16-12. An SBU service error and two Kelly Cameron aces brought UAlbany back within one at 16-15. But UAlbany could not get closer, with SBU ending on a 3-0 run to win the game 25-20 and the match in three.
Stony Brook advances to take on Binghamton in the America East Tournament final tomorrow at 5 p.m. in the University Gym.
