Women's Track Earns Fourth Consecutive Indoor Conference Title

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—For the fourth consecutive season, the University at Albany women's indoor track & field team has won the America East Indoor Championships. The women scored 210 points to claim the title. New Hampshire was runner-up, scoring 133.5 points. Binghamton was third, scoring 113 points.
In the women's 60-meter dash, Stephanie Osuji placed third overall, running a 7.73. Dayleen Santana Rodriguez was fifth in a time of 7.73, and Taahira Butterfield ran a 7.91 for eighth.
Chibugo Ike placed second in the 60-hurdles, running an 8.72. Aderinsola Ajala was fourth in 8.84, followed by Niami Morrison in 8.85, and Paige Vadnais in 8.94 for seventh.
Grace Claxton earned 200-meter title, running a time of 24.36. Stephanie Osuji, who earned second in 24.63, followed her closely behind. Taahira Butterfield placed fourth in 25.03. Claxton also defended her title in the 400-meter race in a time of 54.59. Halie Snyder was second, running a 55.84 and Aderinsola Ajala ran a 57.75 for sixth place.
Sophomore Osayi Owie won the 500-meter race in a personal best time of 1:15.59. In the 800-meter race, Dominique Claudio placed third in 2:15.00. Breanna Cummings ran a 2:17.12 for sixth. Nira Lovick placed fourth in the 1,000-meter, running a 2:55.68. Hannah Smith took eighth in the mile with a time of 5:12.28.
Freshman Cara Sherman placed second in the 3,000-meter with a personal best time of 9:49.17. Molly Pezzulo was seventh, running a 9:52.91.
The women's 4x400 relay of Aderinsola Ajala, Halie Snyder, Akua Williams, and Grace Claxton ran a collective time of 3:47.33 to win first place. The 4x800 relay composed of Tiguida Toure, Breanna Cummings, Dominique Claudio, and Nira Lovick placed fourth, running a time of 9:21.97.
In the field events, Freshman Anika Hibbard placed third overall in the women's high jump with a 5' 7" mark. Solène Bastien was fifth with a mark of 5' 5.25" and Joanna Heath was eighth with a mark of 5' 3.75". Solène Bastien also took the triple jump title with a mark of 40' 9.75".
UAlbany had five women in the top ten of the shot put. Zoe Doolittle was fifth with a mark of 42' 0.75", followed by Tara Belinsky with a mark of 42' 0.75" for sixth. Chinwe Igwe was seventh with a mark of 41' 2.25", Mary Adeyeye was eighth with a mark of 40' 9.75", and Lundy Spinner placed tenth, throwing 39' 8.5".
In total, the women seven events in the two-day meet. They shared in victory with the UAlbany men, who won their 11th consecutive title. The men scored 180 points to defeat runner-up Binghamton, who scored 146 points. This was also the fourth year in a row that the men and women have both taken the title. Both the men's and women's coaches earned Coaching Staff of the Year. Chinwe Igwe won Most Outstanding Field Performer of the Meet and Grace Claxton earned the Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet.
With the conclusion of conference championships, the Great Danes will return the Ocean Breeze Complex for the final time next weekend for the Fastrack Last Chance Meet.
