Barros Goal Highlights 1-1 Men's Soccer Draw Against Colgate

BOX SCORE

ALBANY, N.Y.Jake Barros gave University at Albany men's soccer (1-0-2) a 1-0 lead in the first half, but a last-second Colgate (1-1-1) tally led to a 1-1 double overtime tie at Bob Ford Field on Friday night against the Raiders.

“We showed some good things in flashes,” said head coach Trevor Gorman. “We have to go back now and do a little bit of a better job managing games and putting teams away in the second half. It's about learning lessons and getting better, and this is a game that will force us to do that.”

Both teams started off slow in the opening 10 minutes, but Barros came off the bench to score UAlbany's goal in the 32nd minute. Pedro Espindola registered the first shot on goal of the game for the Great Danes, and assisted on the Barros goal down the left side shortly thereafter. Barros has now scored in UAlbany's last two games.

UAlbany and Colgate combined for just three shots on goal in the first half, but both teams began putting pressure on up front to start the second period. Leo Melgar took a cross off his chest and fired one-time on net but the goalie made the save.

Colgate had an opportunity to counter after an unlucky bounce on the UAlbany defensive end, but Tim Allen stepped in to make the save. Allen punched out several corners by the Raiders before the Great Danes charged down the field.

Ivan Martinez had a quality look in the 75th minute on a pass from Melgar, but fired high just inside the 18-yard box. Afonso Pinheiro turned in traffic and took aim down the middle with six minutes left in regulation, but the Colgate keeper managed the shot headed to the lower left corner.

Colgate got on the board with 1:36 left on the clock in the second half.

With time winding down in the first overtime, the Raiders made their way to the offensive end, but Bernardo Mattos made the tackle in the 18-yard box and headed down the field. Pinheiro headed to goal again but hit the post in the 97th minute.

Melgar had the team's best opportunity in the second overtime after tracking down a rebound in the box. Colgate again managed the save and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

UAlbany had 10 shots on goal to Colgate's five, and Allen did not see any shots on goal in the overtime periods. The senior goalkeeper made four saves in the tie and remains undefeated in net for the season.

Gorman's squad returns to Bob Ford Field on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., for a matinee against Monmouth (1-1-0).
