King Has Career Game In Football's 41-28 Slip To No. 20/22 Richmond

ALBANY, N.Y. – With a sellout crowd of 8,500 packed at Bob Ford Field, the visiting University of Richmond Spiders overcame the University at Albany football team, 41-28, Saturday on Homecoming Weekend. Ranked 20/22 in the Top-25 polls, Richmond improved to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in CAA play, while the Great Danes fell to 4-2 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.

“There was a huge size disadvantage out there for us, but we fought and played hard, “said Head Coach Greg Gattuso. “Richmond is a very good team. We gave them an early seven which was very hurtful and we had opportunities to make a few plays but just couldn't.”

Redshirt senior wide receiver Cole King led UAlbany offensively with a career-high 11 receptions, 145 receiving yards, and a touchdown. Freshman receiver Josh Gontarek also caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Will Fiacchi, hauling in six receptions in the game for 80 yards. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Brad Harris added five catches and 79 receiving yards.

With run game limited, Fiacchi completed 28-of-49 passes for a season-high 341 passing yards. It also marked the second-highest passing yard performance in his career.

On the ground, Omar Osbourne ran the ball nine times for a total of 32 yards, while redshirt senior Jake Meek rushed for two touchdowns on six carries, accruing 26 yards.

Defensively, redshirt senior Christian Dorsey led the squad with 14 tackles, including six solo, while redshirt sophomore Michael Nicastro also totaled 14 tackles (2 solo) and logged a 24-yard interception – the first of his collegiate career. Safety Kyle Sakowski also intercepted a pass for 23 yards, and totaled 11 tackles (8 solo). Fellow safety T.J. Idowu brought down 11 (6 solo), as well. True freshman Jamal Robinson had a breakout game at cornerback, recording an interception, four pass breakups, and nine tackles (7 solo).

Richmond jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the opening quarter, making quick work of a UAlbany miscue. The Great Danes won the coin toss and opted to receive, but on the third play of the drive, Richmond linebacker Aaron Roane picked off Fiacchi's pass just off the line of scrimmage at the UA-22. Richmond quarterback Michael Strauss led the Spiders into the end zone with four completed passes, capped by a four yard touchdown toss to Reggie Diggs, giving the visitors a 7-0 lead with 11:10 on the clock.

UAlbany looked to get on the board on its next drive with a 50-yard field goal attempt, but it fell short, and the Spiders turned their next turn into a 40-yard field goal for a 10-0 advantage at the 5:46 mark.

Richmond successfully put points on the board in its third straight drive, as Peter Yoder connected on a 28-yard field goal with 48 seconds remaining in the first quarter for a 13-0 lead.

However, the Great Danes kept their composure and responded at the start of the second stanza. Fiacchi completed a 35-yard pass to King and a 30-yarder to Harris, setting up back-to-back seven-yard rushes by Meek. The second put the Danes into the end zone and onto the board with 13:40 remaining in the half, cutting the margin to six after Patrick Toole's point-after.

Robinson ended the Spiders' next drive with a pick, but UAlbany was unable to turn it into points, having to punt.

Starting on their own 16, the Spiders drove 84 yards on 11 plays, scoring a touchdown on Strauss' 30-yard pass to Brian Brown with 5:23 to go in the second, giving Richmond a 20-7 advantage.

The Spiders added another touchdown before the break, a two-yard run by Seth Fisher with 1:42 on the clock. However, the Danes answered with Toole's 37-yard field goal with 12 seconds remaining, making the score 27-10 at the half.

Out of the break, Richmond struck again immediately, driving 67 yards on five plays, ending on Stephen Barnette's 35-yard touchdown reception from Strauss.

Stepping up on defense, UAlbany held the Spiders off the board for the rest of the third quarter, as Nicastro ended a drive with a 24-yard interception and the Danes forced the Spiders to punt for the first time in the contest with 4:27 remaining in the third.

Making the most of the stop, UAlbany used nine plays to travel 64-yards, and capped the drive with a 16-yard touchdown pass to King with four seconds remaining in the third quarter. With a missed PAT, the score stood 34-16 heading into the final stanza.

Forcing three turnovers in the contest, UAlbany again turned the Spiders' miscue into points, as Sakowski picked off a pass and returned it 23-yards to the Richmond-42. The Danes then worked their way down the gridiron on seven plays, ending with Meek's three-yard rush through the Spider's line, making the score 34-22 with 10:41 to go.

Richmond responded, handing the ball off to Fisher five times in the nine-play drive, including a 10-yard rush into the end zone with 5:53 remaining. Yoder's point-after made it 41-22.

Displaying perseverance and persistence, the Great Danes battled their way 70 yards for a game-capping touchdown with 4:38 on the clock. Fiacchi connected with Harris three times, including a 13-yarder and a 19-yarder, as well as Gontarek twice for 20-yard reception and 24-yard touchdown catch, making the final score 41-28.

“We are who we are, and when we play our game we are pretty competitive. And we need to play that way,” said Gattuso. “We didn't for much of the game. Once we started getting back to what we do, we had a chance to get back into the game.”

Leading Richmond, Strauss finished with 277 passing yards and three touchdowns, completing 26-of-36 attempts. Fisher led the running game, carrying the ball 17 times for 85 yards and two touchdowns. The Spiders converted on 9-of-12 third down opportunities and were successful all four times they reached the red zone.

Getting away from Bob Ford Field for the first time in a month, the Great Danes hit the road to Maine next Saturday, taking on the defending CAA champions at 12:30 p.m.
