Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Down a score early, the UAlbany women's soccer team kept the game close most of the way, but was defeated by Canisius 3-0 on the road on Friday night at the Demske Sports Complex.

Canisius (2-5-1) struck early in the third minute.  Brittany Krause made a cross into the box.  Sabrina Fitzgerald received the pass and kicked the ball into the net for a 1-0 Golden Griffins lead.

UAlbany (1-5) looked to respond.  Aubrey VanGorder took corner kicks in the seventh and tenth minutes, but neither turned into shots.  Then in the 14th minute, Helena Olafsdottir got free and fired towards the goal, but keeper Megan Tock made the save.

In minute 21, Brianna Smith heads a ball towards the goal, but Alana Brennan saved the shot.  Five minutes later, Brennan saved a second shot to keep the deficit at one.

VanGorder took a third corner kick in the 36th minute, but a foul stopped a chance for a shot.

After the Great Danes protected against a couple of Canisius shots, they tried to push at the end of the half.  Allison Carhart and VanGorder each took shots at the goal in the final couple of minutes in the first half, but neither connected as UAlbany went into halftime down 1-0.

Right into the second half, an aggressive UAlbany team earned a corner kick opportunity, but did not get off a shot.  The team played good defense and in the 56th minute, saw Krista Fitzpatrick take a shot, but Tock saved the ball again.

In the 66th minute, Kari Quinn got an open opportunity inside the box, but again Tock came up with the save.

Canisius counterattacked in the 68th minute; Mallory Illsley kicked the ball from the corner of the box above the goalie's head into the net for a 2-0 lead.  A little over four minutes later, Brittany Krause took a rebound off the post and put it into the goal, making the score 3-0 in favor of the home team.

UAlbany was not able to get another shot off and fell 3-0 to the Golden Griffins.

Off UAlbany's seven shots, five of them were on goal.  Caitlyn Paltsios took two shots, getting one on goal.  For the home team, Fitzgerald and Krause each finished with three points on a goal and an assist.

The Great Danes will stay on the road to take on Cornell on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Ithaca.
