UAlbany Volleyball Falls to Michigan State and IPFW at Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, MICH. -- UAlbany got swept in two matches on Saturday to finish 0-3 at the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational, hosted by Michigan State. The Great Danes fell to the host Spartans, 3-0, with scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-19 in the first match of the day. Later in the afternoon, UAlbany dropped a 3-0 decision to IPFW with scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-17.

Dunja Prgomet and Sara Pope led the Great Danes against Michigan State with eight kills apiece. Prgomet also recorded a team-high six digs, while libero Viktoriia Stroilo came up with five digs defensively. Lorena Marquez took over setting duties for the Great Danes, and handed out 24 assists to go along with two digs and two service aces. Gabby Whitworth also smacked six kills on .500 hitting, and had one block assist.

Michigan State (8-0) was led by Lauren Wicinski and Amy Dentlinger with 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Kori Moster finished with a match-high 12 digs, and also recorded three of the Spartans' eight service aces.

Traci Vandegrift led UAlbany against IPFW, finishing with a team-high eight kills and 14 digs. Stroilo came up with 13 digs and served up two aces, while Samantha Brostrom made her first appearance of the season, recording seven kills and six digs. Marquez and Sofia Furlong split setting duties against the Mastadons, with Marquez tallying 13 assists and five digs, while Furlong totaled 11 assists, three kills and one solo block.

IPFW (9-2) was led by a double-double from Emily Spencer, who recorded 15 kills and 10 digs. Jesse Manwaring added 10 kills, while Tessa McGill finished with a match-high 19 digs. Setter Megan Steenhuysen handed out 41 assists, while also hitting .800 with four kills on five attempts and serving up two assists.

UAlbany (2-7) will return to action on Friday, Sept. 14, with the last regular-season tournament of 2012. The Great Danes will take on Virginia Commonwealth, Sacred Heart and Army at the West Point Challenge.
