Women's Soccer Outlasts Canisius In High-Scoring Match, 4-3

ALBANY, N.Y.- Senior forward Shayla Bergeron lead the match with two goals to give UAlbany the win over Canisius, 4-3, on Friday, September 7 at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

With a three-goal lead at the half, the Great Danes Bergeron would add another goal, with her left foot from eight-yards out, to put the lead at four at the 57th minute.

Canisius (1-5) would come storming back with three consecutive goals in a 10-minute run that would cut the deficit to just one, 4-3, at the 68th minute.

After Bergeron tallied the Great Danes' goal in the 57th minute, the Golden Griffins Brittany Krause would score in just 46 seconds. Following Krause, Jenny Piaggione rattled off Canisius second goal from inside the box. To finish off the run, Brittany Bowen sent a cross to give Brianna Smith a running header in the 68th minute to cut the deficit to one.

The Great Danes would hold on for the final 22 minutes of the match to earn their second win of the year and first at home.

UAlbany (2-3-1) opened up the first half with a bang, scoring three goals. Senior forward Shayla Bergeron began the Great Dane scoring in the 31st minute with a deep through-ball pass at midfield from Despina Psomopoulos.

Then in a three-minute span, the Great Danes would tally on two more goals to take a three-goal lead at the half. Freshman forward Allison Carhart and senior forward Regina Nowicki would contribute those two goals during the span.

Carhart's goal was a result of a deep punt from goalkeeper Alana Brennan, which then was headed from a Canisius defender in attempt to pass to the goalie but Carhart would intercept the pass and beat the goalie.

UAlbany goalkeeper Alana Brenna improved to 2-0 on the season with five saves on eight chances. Canisius goalkeeper Megan Tock fell to 1-5 overall making two saves on six chances.

The Great Danes finish their two-game homestand against Cornell on Sunday, September 9 at the Plumer Sports Complex (6 p.m.)
