UAlbany Volleyball Improves to 2-0 in Conference Play With 3-1 Win Over Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Samantha Brostrom recorded 11 kills to and six digs to lead UAlbany to a 3-1 win over Stony Brook in America East Conference volleyball action on Sunday afternoon at Pritchard Gymnasium. The Great Danes posted set scores of 25-14, 25-21, 17-25, and 25-20 in the victory. UAlbany improved to 5-11 overall, and move to 2-0 in league play, while Stony Brook falls to 6-9 overall, 1-1 in the conference.

The Great Danes rolled to an easy victory in the first set, getting three kills from Sara Pope and two kills from four different players. On 21 attack attempts, UAlbany only had two errors, managing a .429 hitting percentage in the set, while holding Stony Brook to .100 hitting. Melissa Rigo led the Seawolves with four kills in the set.

Brostrom came alive in set number two, getting five kills on .333 hitting. Alberte Bjornsson added four kills and a service ace, while Viktoriia Stroilo had seven digs and the Great Danes' second service ace of the set. Rigo paced Stony Brook once again, coming up with eight kills, four digs and one ace.

The Great Danes struggled with their hitting in the third set, as they recorded nine hitting errors. Rigo and Stephanie McFadden led Stony Brook with four kills apiece, as the Seawolves effectively shut down the UAlbany offense. Tatum Jungsten finished with a team-high three kills in the set for the Great Danes, while Lindsey McCloskey dug up six Stony Brook attacks.

UAlbany took advantage of poor hitting on Stony Brook's part in the fourth and final set, as the Great Danes only needed five kills, as the Seawolves recorded 11 hitting errors. Brostrom recorded three of those five kills for UAlbany, while setter Sofia Furlong added to the Great Dane win, coming up with three block assists. Rigo led Stony Brook with four kills.

Bjornsson and Junsten added seven kills apiece for UAlbany in the match, while Stroilo led three players with double-digit dig totals with 15. McCloskey added 14 digs, while Kathleen Horvath recorded 13. Furlong was just shy of a double-double, finishing with 28 assists and nine digs. The Great Danes also out-blocked the Seawolves, 7-4, led by Furlong with four block assists.

Rigo completed a double-double for Stony Brook with a match-high 20 kills and 10 digs. McFadded added 10 kills, while Hailee Herc led the Seawolves defensively with 16 digs, also adding two service aces.

UAlbany will return to action on Friday, Oct. 5, hosting America East foe Binghamton at 7 p.m.
