ALBANY, N.Y. - On a rainy night in Albany, Stony Brook forward Leonardo Fernandes' free-kick goal led Stony Brook over UAlbany, 1-0, on Saturday, September 29 at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The loss puts the Great Danes at 2-8-0 overall and 0-1 in the America East Conference, while the Seawolves improve to a league-best 7-2-1 and 1-0 in conference play.
Stony Brook (7-2-1, 1-0 America East) seized its best opportunity in the 30th minute, being awarded a free kick from a UAlbany foul. Seawolf forward Fernandes lined up from 20 yards out and sent a bending shot past Great Dane goalkeeper Tim Allen in the top left shelf. The free-kick goal put Stony Brook up 1-0.
UAlbany (2-8-0, 0-1 America East) looked to fight its way in the second half, being down 1-0. But with six fouls and not registering one corner kick, the Great Dane offense never had a chance to find an opportunity to test Stony Brook goalkeeper Stefan Manz.
The Seawolves led the Great Danes in both shots, 12-2 and corner kicks, 10-0.
UAlbany goalie Tim Allen made four saves on five chances, while his counterpart Stefan Manz would not tally a save for his third clean sheet of the season.
The Great Danes continue their three-game home stand against Binghamton on Saturday, October 6 at the Plumeri Sports Complex (7 p.m.).
