Amherst, Mass. - A set piece in the 37th minute by UMass downs UAlbany, 1-0, on Sunday, August 26 at Rudd Field. The loss puts the Great Danes at 0-1-1 and the Minutewomen improve to 2-1.
UAlbany goalkeeper Jackie Ubert tallied four saves on five chances and falls to 0-1-1. UMass goalkeeper Stephanie Gordon, with a cleansheet, made five saves on the afternoon to improve to 2-1.
In the 37th minute of the match, Umass (2-1) tallied the game's first goal off a set piece from 18-yards. Junior defender Grace Combs drove the free kick into the goalkeeper box and sophomore defender Kristen Gargiulo would get a piece of it to allow the ball to get passed UAlbany goalkeeper Ubert.
After falling behind early in the first half, UAlbany (0-1-1) looked to get on the scoreboard in the second half. Senior forward Shayla Bergeron took a shot from 12-yards out in the 60th minute but was knocked away by Gordon. Then in the 82nd minute senior forward Maggie DeVerna took a shot from about 15 yards out but was wide of the net. UMass would eventually hold on in the second half to get the victory.
The Minutewomen held advantages over the Great Danes in shots, 16-12, and in corner kicks, 7-6.
The Great Danes will get ready for their weekend trip to North Carolina with the first game on Friday, August 31 against Western Carolina.
