UAlbany Drops Its Second Consecutive Game At SEFCU Arena Against Boston U., 81-78

Albany, N.Y.- Boston U.'s Darryl Partin took over the second half, scoring 25 of his 33 points to lead BU over UAlbany, 81-78, on Monday, Feb. 6 at SEFCU Arena. The Terriers made a 15-point first half deficit disappear by scoring 50 in the second half to give the Great Danes their second straight home loss of the season. UAlbany's junior guard Gerard Suero went 8-of-8 from the free-throw line which helped break the program's record of free throws made (176), previously held by Jamar Wilson, and attempted (210), previously held by Jim Oppedisano, in a season. Suero has currently made 179 free throws and has attempted 215, both of which are currently leading the nation.
The Terrier's Partin led all scorers with 33 points, 25 of which came in the second half on 8-of-10 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Partin's teammate DJ Irving chipped in with 17 points and four assists. BU shot 55.6 percent (15-27) in the second half, while going almost perfect from the free-throw line (14-16) with Partin going 3-of-3 to tie the game at 74 with 3:14 left in the game.
UAlbany's Suero is beginning to heat up again recording his third consecutive 20-plus point effort (28) along with eight boards. Jayson Guerrier and Mike Black each scored in double-digits with 16 and 11, respectively. Blake Metcalf was one rebound away from recording his third career double-double, ending the contest with 10 points and nine rebounds. UAlbany was able to out rebound BU, 37-28, but did not hit a single three-pointer in the second half, going 0-of-5 from behind the arc.
The Great Danes defense came out strong in the first half by going up 18-11 with 11:06 remaining. Metcalf was able to get open by scoring six of his 10 points during that stretch. UAlbany would extend its lead to as much as 17, 46-29, with 43 seconds remaining in the half.
The Terrier's Mike Terry Jr. would force a quick foul with the last-second shot before the half and hit the one-and-one to cut the deficit to 15, 46-31, at the half. Suero and Guerrier each scored 12 apiece to lead all scorers at the half. Both teams shot just under 50 percent from the field, with UAlbany going 6-of-13 from three-point land to Boston U.'s 3-of-9.
UAlbany would sustain a 16-point lead, 66-50, with 11:23 left in the game. However, the Great Danes would unfortunately pick up four fouls in 28 seconds (from 12:54-12:26) which would be key down the stretch by putting the Terriers one foul away from the bonus.
Boston U. would then go on an 13-2 run to cut the deficit down to five, 68-63, with 6:56 remaining in the game. Partin and Irving each would hit key three-pointers during the run.
Guerrier would put the Great Danes back up to eight, 71-63, with an old-fashion three-point play.
Partin would give the Terriers their first lead of the game, 77-76, by scoring nine of his 33 during a 14-5 run with 2:38 left in the game.
Suero would drive to the basket and get to the line and make both free throws to grab the lead back, 78-77, with 2:21 left. But UAlbany would not make another point for the rest of the game as BU's Patrick Hazel would score the final four points of the game.
The Great Danes look ahead to a three-day road trip that begins with New Hampshire on Thursday, Feb. 8 (7pm).
