Binghamton Defeats UAlbany 1-0 On Saturday

ALBANY, N.Y. - Binghamton used an Austin Hughes header to defeat UAlbany, 1-0, on Saturday, October 6 at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Great Dane loss dropped them to 2-9 overall and 0-2 in the America East.

Binghamton (6-5, 2-0 America East) held UAlbany to just one shot and no corner kicks, used just one set play to get on the board first. In the 44th minute, Bearcat senior midfielder Adam Whitehead sent in the corner kick where teammate Austin Hughes was set up on the back post for the header and the 1-0 lead.

With their backs in the corner, UAlbany (2-9, 0-2 America East) look to tie the game at one. In the 66th minute, freshman midfielder Philip Persson sent a well-touched thru ball to a streaking Anthony Rozzano, who collided with Binghamton goalkeeper Stefano Frantelizzi to create free kick off the foul of Frantelizzi. Persson, who took the free kick, volleyed a shot over the Bearcat wall, but Frantelizzi would get a hand on it before it snuck underneath the crossbar.

Then in the 70th minute, as UAlbany's Persson sent in a cross from a corner kick which was cleared to the top of the box. Senior co-captain Jeff Pierre timed the clear for a one-timer from about 20 yards away. However, the shot would graze the top of the cross bar. Binghamton would hold off UAlbany for the final 20 minutes of the match to earn their second conference win of the season. the

Great Dane goalkeeper Tim Allen made three saves on four chances between the pipes. Allen's counterpart Bearcat goalkeeper Frantelizzi tallied just one save for his first career clean sheet.

UAlbany looks ahead to its back end of the three-match home stand against New Hampshire on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at the Plumeri Sports Complex (7 p.m.).
