ALBANY, N.Y. -- Senior Gabby Whitworth, in her new role as UAlbany's setter, recorded 30 assists, seven digs, two aces, and five kills on .833 hitting to lead the Great Danes to a 3-0 sweep of Binghamton in America East Conference volleyball action on Friday evening at University Gym. UAlbany posted set scores of 25-16, 25-21, and 25-17 in the win.
Whitworth quarterbacked the Great Danes to a .314 hitting percentage in the first set with 10 assists and four digs herself. Sarah Pope and Traci Vandegrift each recorded three kills, while Samantha Brostrom totaled four kills and five digs to pace UAlbany to an easy 25-16 victory.
Binghamton fought back in the second set, building up a 5-0 lead before Tatum Jungsten ended the rally with a kill. Vandegrift was the leader in set two for the Great Danes, finishing with seven kills on .545 hitting, much in thanks to 11 assists from Whitworth. Pope also continued hitting well for UAlbany, recording four kills along with a big solo block in the middle of the set.
UAlbany was going for the sweep in the third set, and got it behind six kills from Pope. Whitworth, who didn't record one attack error in the match, missed her first attack attempt to lower her perfect hitting percentage, but still manage two kills on three attempts in the set. Whitworth also handed out nine assists and served up one ace.
Pope totaled 13 kills to lead all players, hitting .417 for the match. Vandegrift recorded 11 kills, six digs, one ace and one block assist, while Brostrom finished with seven kills and nine digs. Victoriia Stroilo led the team defensively with 14 digs and also served up two of UAlbany's six aces.
Alex Roland led Binghamton (5-14, AE 2-2) with 13 kills, while Grace Vickers recorded nine kills for the Bearcats. Setter Amanda Dettmann totaled 32 assists and seven digs, while libero Xiomara Ortiz came up with 15 digs defensively.
UAlbany (6-10, AE 3-0) will return to action on Sunday, hosting America East foe UMBC at 2 p.m.
