Hempstead, N.Y. -- Senior forward Brett Carrington headed in a cross from Mike Annarumma with four minutes and 31 seconds elapsed in overtime as Hofstra captured a 3-2 win over UAlbany on Monday, Aug. 29 at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The non-league match delayed to an 8:10 p.m. start due to the Great Danes' extended travel in the wake of Hurricane Irene.
UAlbany (0-2) was able to strike first with sophomore defender Christoffer Nisser sending a crossing pass from the right side of the field 40 yards out into the box for Gates to squeeze in an easy tap for a 1-0 lead.
Hofstra (2-0) then quickly tied up the match with sophomore midfielder Chris Griebich sending a free kick from 25 yards out to the right post and finding the back of the net to put the match at 1-1. Once the second half began, the Pride wasted no time in taking advantage of the match, with a mishandling of a cross by UAlbany's senior goalkeeper Adrian Foncette, as sophomore midfield Florian Popp chipped in a quick goal to put the Pride up 2-1.
UAlbany (0-2) tied the contest at two apiece when Thomas Manz scored off Pomare Te Anau's corner kick at 57:46. Quintel Gates had given the Great Danes a 1-0 lead at 10:04 in the first half, but the Pride's Chris Greebach connected on a 25-yard free kick four minutes later.
UAlbany lead in shots, 20-15, and shots on net, 7-5, while tying in corner kickes 8-8. Both goalkeepers played the full 94:31 with Foncette recording two saves on five chances and Pellegrini tallying five saves on seven chances.
The Great Danes head to Newark, N.J. to face off against New Jersey Institute of Technology on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7 pm at Lubetkin Field.
