UAlbany Drops 41-40 Decision to Binghamton in America East Women's Basketball Action

Albany, N.Y. - Jasbriell Swain nailed a jumper from the top of the key with just under a minute to go to seal up a 41-40 win for Binghamton over UAlbany in America East Conference women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon at SEFCU Arena.

Swain's jumper put Binghamton back on top after a closely contested second half in which the largest lead was six points. UAlbany had taken its second lead of the second period after Cassandra Callaway drained a 3-pointer from the right side of the arc with 2:32 left to play. After coming out of a 22-20 UAlbany lead at halftime, Binghamton's Kara Elofson hit a jumper to tie the score, followed by a Vive Rebane basket that put the Bearcats on top. A jumper by Rebane at 14:41 put the Bearcats on top by three, 28-25, but UAlbany's Ebone Henry nailed two free throws to keep it a one-point game.

The Great Danes refused to fold, getting behind, 32-27, with 11:10 on the clock before scoring four straight to get back within one on a Callaway layup. Jackie Ward recorded a steal and converted a fast break layup with 6:40 on the clock to put Binghamton up by six, 37-31, but Callaway responded with three of her team-high 12 points for UAlbany, keeping the Great Danes within striking distance. Felicia Johnson hit one of two free throws at 3:53 to pull UAlbany within two, 39-37, followed by Callaway's second 3-pointer of the game that gave the Great Danes the late lead.

UAlbany held the largest lead of the first half, 8-2, after a Henry jumper at 13:07. Binghamton battled back, tying the game at 11-11 on a 3-pointer by Andrea Holmes with 7:35 left to play. The score was knotted up twice more in the half, as the lead kept bouncing between the teams. Two free throws by Melia Basavand with two seconds on the clock gave the Great Danes the two-point halftime advantage.

Henry recorded 11 points for UAlbany (15-12, AE 8-6), while also grabbing seven boards and three assists. Julie Forster led the Great Danes with nine rebounds and two blocks, but was held to just one point. Binghamton (17-10, AE 10-4) out-rebounded UAlbany, 46-39, led by Swain and Rebane, who finished with 14 and 13 boards, respectively. Holmes finished with a game-high 13 points, while Swain chipped in with seven points, three steals and two assists.

UAlbany will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 23, visiting UMBC at 7 p.m.
