In Big Apple Battle at Madison Square Garden, Boston U. Pulls Away in Final Half Against UAlbany

New York, N.Y. - John Holland had 19 of his 25 points in the second half in leading Boston University to a 63-44 America East Conference victory over UAlbany in the Big Apple Battle on Thursday, Feb. 10 in America East Conference play. The contest was the second half of a college basketball doubleheader at Madison Square Garden.
Boston U. (13-13, AE 8-4) led 40-36 in the final period, but then held UAlbany (12-15, AE 5-7) scoreless for more than 10 minutes. The Terriers, who posted their third straight win, reeled 17 unanswered in that stretch. Holland, a 6-foot-5 senior, had eight of his team's next 10 points. Freshman D.J. Irving drilled a three-point field goal for a 53-40 lead.
The Great Danes, who were down 12 early in the final period, tried to claw their way back into the fray. Tim Ambrose sank a three-pointer following an offensive rebound to slice the deficit to 37-33. Boston U.'s Dom Morris answered with a triple from right of the key, before Logan Aronhalt countered with a 3-pointer from the left corner. However, UAlbany could not buy a basket after that point and shot 34 percent overall.
"You can't go scoreless for long stretches against a team of that caliber," UAlbany coach Will Brown said. "They hurt us on the glass and (John) Holland and (Darryl) Partin are as good as anyone in our league on the perimeter."
The Terriers, who shot 52.4 percent from the field in the first half, used a 9-0 run to push out to a 22-12 lead. La Salle transfer Darryl Partin scored seven consecutive points, including a three-pointer and a baseline jumper.
UAlbany closed within 24-20 on a conventional three-point play by Luke Devlin and Ambrose's 3-point shot. But Partin, a 6'6" junior who had all 14 of his points in the period, helped his team pull away again with five straight and Holland canned a long-range jumper for a 32-21 halftime cushion.
"We couldn"t make a shot," said UAlbany's Aronhalt, who had 12 points. "Scoring 44 points won't get it done. We know we have to get on a roll going into the (conference) tournament."
The Terriers moved into a tie for second place in the conference standings with Maine. Ambrose finished with 13 points for the Great Danes, who were making their first-ever Madison Square Garden appearance.
