Second Half Surge Puts Siena Past UAlbany, 64-60; Black Records 18 Points

Albany, N.Y. - OD Anosike with 21 points and 18 rebounds lead Siena past UAlbany, 64-60, on Monday, Dec. 5 at the Times Union Center. The Saints shot 37.1 percent from the field and had a commanding lead in rebounds, 46-35. UAlbany will have a quick turnaround as the next game tips-off on Wednesday, Dec. 6 against Colgate in SEFCU Arena.
Mike Black led all Great Danes with 18 points, including four long balls. Black put up 13 of those points in the first half run by UAlbany. Blake Metcalf and Luke Devlin pulled down seven rebounds each. Logan Aronhalt and Jayson Guerrier sent in 13 a piece in the effort and a combined eight rebounds.
In a game that was in the hands of the Great Danes for the first 20 minutes, who shot 44.1% from the field and 45.5% from downtown, the Saints tilted the momentum for a 35-point second half.
Continuing its hot shooting in the second half, Siena started off on a 10-3 run to cut the deficit to one, 40-39, with 14:33 left in the second half. The run was sparked with two Anosike dunks and capped by a Rob Poole three-pointer.
The Saints (3-5) would grab the lead, 46-44, for the first time since opening the game, 7-2, at 17:07 in the first half with an offensive tip-in by Kyle Downey. After that tip-in the Saints would not look back from there.
"Siena did a great job in the second half", said head coach Will Brown about 64-60 defeat. "Overall I was disappointed, I thought we had an opportunity to put the game away in the first half having been up 19 at one point but finishing off the half only up eight. With three banked three-pointers and not rebounding is what was the difference in this game."
Siena began the game on a 7-2 run that was capped by a three-pointer by Evan Hymes.
Logan Aronhalt would hit a 12-footer to start a UAlbany run of 16-2 to give the Great Danes a 18-9 lead with 8:56 left to play in the first half. Jayson Guerrier and Ralph Watts would help spark the offense by contributing six quick points off the bench during the run.
Senior Mike Black would extend UAlbany's lead, 31-13, with 5:18 left with 11 straight points of his own, which was highlighted by going 3-of-3 from beyond the arc.
The Saints would cut the deficit, 31-21, with an 8-0 run of their own, which was sparked by two three's by Downey and Evan Hymes and an offensive tip-in by OD Anosike with 3:20 left to play.
Gerardo Suero would be the only Great Dane to reach the foul line in the half to add two more to the lead, 35-23, with 1:11 remaining in the first.
Siena would finish out the first half lead by Hymes' two consecutive banked three-pointers to trail UAlbany, 37-29.
