Ithaca, N.Y.- After shooting a team-high 26 points and 7-of-12 from behind the arc, Drew Ferry helped carry Cornell (4-4) to an overtime victory over University at Albany (5-5), 85-82, at the Newman Arena on Saturday, Dec. 17. The Great Danes next game is on the road against St. Francis on Monday, Dec. 19. UAlbany had all five starters in double-figures with Gerardo Suero leading the group with 22 points (10-10 FT).
UAlbany's Blake Metcalf recorded his first double-double of his career with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Great Danes would have all five of its starters in double-figures, Suero (22), Logan Aronhalt (19), Mike Black (15 points), Metcalf (12), and Luke Devlin (10).
Cornell's Drew Ferry led all scorers with 26 points (7-12 3FG). The Big Red also had three others in double-figures with Josh Figini (14), Galal Cancer (11), and Johnathan Gray (10).
In the beginning of overtime, Suero quickly fouled which disqualified him for the rest of the game and Cornell gained the lead, 78-76, with a jumper by Miles Asafo-Adjei.
Then Mike Black took over in overtime by scoring all six of UAlbany's points and tied the game, 82-82, with :29 seconds remaining. After a 30-second timeout by head coach Bill Courtney with :27 seconds remaining, the Big Red's Chris Wroblewski made a well-contested game-winning three with :09 seconds left on the clock to seal the victory, 85-82.
Cornell came out exactly how they did in the first half looking to keep the game at its tempo. The 10-point lead that the Great Danes had with 8:50 left in the second half disappeared. Drew Ferry came up big with nine points in a two-minute span which helped give the Big Red the lead, 65-63, after two free throws made by Johnathan Gray.
UAlbany would fight back never being down by more than seven points to keep the game within reach. With :34 seconds remaining and down by six, the Great Danes found their way back into the game with a layup by Mike Black, a quick steal by Blake Metcalf which turned into a three pointer by Logan Aronhalt, and layup by Metcalf with :05 seconds remaining would eventually put the game into overtime, 76-76.
Cornell came out the gates looking to run the tempo going on a 7-2 run with 17:34 in the first half. The run began on a quick bucket by Big Red's Shonn Miller then a turnover on the inbounds pass which turned into a three pointer by Drew Ferry.
UAlbany quickly came back with an answer of its own going on a 16-3 run to grab the lead, 18-10, with 11:54 left to play in the first half. Suero led the charge with six points while going 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
With the Great Danes up 33-21 with 2:23 left to play, the Big Red responded by ending the half on a 6-0 run capped by three pointer by Drew Ferry to cut the deficit, 33-27.
UAlbany would dominate the boards, 42-30, 11 of which were offensive boards.
But the game would end up being decided by the Great Danes turning the ball over 25 times and the Big Red capitalizing with 37 of their points off of those turnovers.
