UAlbany Clinches Spot in America East Tournament; Quintel Gates Delivers Game-Winner

Albany, N.Y.- On a snowy Saturday the scenario for the Great Danes on Senior day was win and they were in the America East Conference Tournament. In the 70th minute of the match, forward Quintel Gates delivered the game-winning goal to defeat New Hampshire, 1-0, on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Varsity Field.
The first half of the match was played at a very slow pace. New Hampshire (6-9-2, AE 1-4-2) was looking for a tie at the least knowing it would move on to the tournament. The Wildcats led the half with shots on net, 2-0, and the Great Danes led in corner kicks, 2-1.
In the second half, UAlbany (5-9-3, AE 1-3-3) came out firing to grab its first conference victory and move on to the postseason. The Great Danes' Jeff Pierre and Brandon Wilson led the offensive attack with two shots a piece looking to find that lone goal to win it. In the 70th minute of play, Pierre attacked the right side of the 10-yard box to lure two New Hampshire defenders and make a crossing pass to a streaking Gates to strike the eventual game-winner.
"I felt excited and relieved", said Gates on his game-winner. "The heart and desire to win each and every game is the X-factor of this team and to be able to move forward to play another game is great."
New Hampshire led in shots, 8-7, and even with UAlbany in corner kicks, 4-4. Travis Worra allowed one goal and recorded no saves. Adrian Foncette recorded three saves for his fourth shutout of the season and 12th of his career.
"The teams resiliency has been the biggest factor throughout this season", said coach Gorman on his first conference win in his first year as a head coach. "I'm happier for the players than myself on this win, they deserved it."
UAlbany is the sixth seed in the America East Tournament and will play the #3 Vermont Catamounts on Saturday, Nov. 5 at Burlington, Vt.
