Defending America East Conference Champion Vermont Posts 60-48 Win over UAlbany

Burlington, Vt. - Brendan Bald and Matt Glass each scored 13 points in leading Vermont to its fourth straight win in a 60-48 America East Conference victory over UAlbany on Thursday, Jan. 6 at Patrick Gymnasium.
Vermont (11-3, AE 2-0) took control early in the final period when Bald reversed a halftime deficit with a baseline jumper and a three-pointer. The Catamounts later ran off nine unanswered to build a double-figure lead. Joey Accaoui hit a 3-pointer off an inbounds pass to ignite that stretch. Glass made two free throws for a 36-25 lead.
The Catamounts, who are undefeated at home this season and have won 16 of their last 17 in this facility, pushed out to a 47-35 when Evan Fjeld made a jumper on the right baseline. Fjeld, a 6-foot-7 senior, finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
UAlbany (8-9, AE 1-1) cut into that margin when Mike Black canned a three-pointer from the right wing that got his team within 47-40. But UVM quickly regained control. Fjeld made a turnaround on the baseline and Glass sank a long-range shot from the right corner for a 12-point lead with less than five minutes remaining.
"They are rock solid and have great size in the frontcourt," said UAlbany coach Will Brown, whose was out-rebounded, 40-28. "Our defense was good enough, but we played too much one-on-one on offense and forced action. We played 30 to 32 seconds on defense, but then they pounded us on the glass and we had to defend for 25 more seconds."
The defenses controlled play in the opening half with both teams held to field goal percentages around the 30-mark. The Catamounts, who are to their best start since the 1950-51 season, led 13-11, but extended their lead on Josh Elbaum's drive and Sandro Carissimo's layup after an offensive rebound.
Vermont was still ahead 22-15 with 3:21 left in the period, but went scoreless to the break. Tim Ambrose, who had 10 points, made a pair of three-point field goals in that span that put his team ahead. The 6-foot senior drilled a 22-footer from the top of the arc with two seconds on the clock.
UAlbany's Logan Aronhalt led all scorers with 21 points, his fifth game with 20-plus this season. Black finished with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists.
