Fordham Holds Off UAlbany, 48-43, in Great Danes' Final Non-League Game of Season

Albany, N.Y. - Becky Peters had 12 points and Abigail Corning added 10 in leading Fordham to a 48-43 non-conference victory over UAlbany on Sunday, Jan. 2 at SEFCU Arena.
Fordham (8-8) snapped 35-35 deadlock when Peters made a 10-foot jumper in the lane and Arielle Collins followed with a three-point field goal from the right side. The second half featured three lead changes and three ties.
The Rams, who had dropped four of their last five outings entering the contest, were still ahead 44-40 after Peters converted a driving layup. But UAlbany (7-6) drew within a single point when Felicia Johnson made a three-pointer from the left corner after a steal with 49.1 seconds remaining.
Collins, a sophomore guard, drove to the right on the lane on Fordham's next possession and hit a cutting Kristina Bell for a layup. The Great Danes had two opportunities to tie draw even in the final 12 seconds, but Johnson and Julie Forster each missed three-point attempts. Kyara Weeks made two free throws with 3.4 seconds left to seal the outcome.
In the opening period both teams struggled from floor as each hovered around the 30-percent figure. UAlbany ran off eight unanswered to take a 20-15 lead. Ebone Henry canned a three-point field goal from the right wing to put her team ahead, before Melia Basavand sank a long-range triple in transition. The Rams closed the gap to 22-20 by halftime. Peters hit a jumper in the lane and connected on a driving bank shot.
UAlbany's Henry led her team with 11 points, while Johnson had 10. Forster, a 6-foot sophomore, had eight points and collected 15 rebounds. The Great Danes, who were playing for the first time in 10 days, managed just 29.3 percent shooting.
