Boston U. Overcomes Halftime Deficit in 70-67 Win Over UAlbany in America East Conference Play

Albany, N.Y. - John Holland had 27 points as Boston University overcame a double-figure halftime deficit en route to a 70-67 America East Conference victory over UAlbany on Saturday, Jan. 15 at SEFCU Arena.
Boston U. (8-10, AE 3-1) trailed by 16 at the break were behind 42-28 before working their way back into the contest. Darryl Partin, who had 11 of his 16 points in the final period, led a run of eight straight points. He hit a fastbreak layup and four consecutive free throws to close the gap.
UAlbany (8-12, AE 1-4) held a 55-48 margin with less than eight minutes to play, but the Terriers took their first lead of the game with a string of eight unanswered. Matt Griffin made a three-pointer and two foul shots and Partin drilled a 3-pointer from the right corner.
Logan Aronhalt, who had 13 points, put the Great Danes ahead with a long-range shot from the right corner. But a driving D.J. Irving hooked up with Jeff Pelage for a layup and a three-point play. Holland, a two-time first-team all-conference forward, made one of his six 3-pointers for a 62-58 lead.
The Terriers, who shot 59.1 percent from the field in the final stanza in gaining their fourth win in a row, had their lead cut in half when John Puk scored on an inbounds play. However, Travis Robinson, a 6-foot-5 freshman, came up with two huge baskets to complete the comeback. He followed Holland's missed three-point attempt and made a reverse layup on the left baseline for a 66-60 cushion in the final minute.
"They made some nice adjustments in the second half and shot the ball well," said UAlbany coach Will Brown, whose team suffered its fourth straight loss. "John Holland is most talented player in our league. We had more balance is the first half, but then we put too much pressure on ourselves because we started to worry about our offense. We dropped the ball and made lazy passes."
The Great Danes, who shot 51.7 percent in the opening half, broke an early 12-12 deadlock with seven straight points. Luke Devlin, who netted 11 points, made a right-elbow jumper before Aronhalt hit a driving bank on the left baseline. Tim Ambrose connected on a conventional three-point play when he was fouled after making a 12-footer in the lane. Ambrose finished with a team-high 18 points.
UAlbany was still ahead, 26-20, before extending the lead to double figures. Mike Black was fouled on a drive from the left for a three-point play. Devlin followed with a 3-pointer from the left corner. The 6-foot-8 freshman ended the half with a three-pointer from nearly the same spot for a 38-22 advantage at the intermission.
"The bench needed to step up and we tried to deliver," explained UAlbany redshirt freshman Ralph Watts, who totaled seven points and six rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench. "We had real energy in the first half, which is something we talked about. We didn't pass the ball and distribute the same way in the second half. We have guys who want to win, we just need to take the next step."
