Boston University Wins Battle With UAlbany for First Place in America East Conference Standings

Albany, N.Y. - Chantell Alford had 20 points and Kerry Cashman added 11 points and 14 rebounds in leading Boston University to a 72-59 victory over UAlbany on Saturday, Jan. 15 at SEFCU Arena. The Terriers, who won their fourth straight, moved into first place in the conference standings.
The Terriers, who are the preseason favorite to win the league title, held UAlbany (10-7, AE 3-1) in check from the beginning, as the Great Danes missed their opening 10 field goal attempts. Meanwhile, Boston U. (7-9. AE 4-0) ran off 11 unanswered at the start. Alex Young, a junior guard who netted 11 points, made two free throws and sank a three-point shot from right of the key in that span.
The Great Danes, who made just 7-of-25 from the floor in the half and finished at 33.3 percent overall, would later trail 24-14 after Felicia Johnson drilled a three-pointer. But BU responded with an 8-2 run. Alford, who earned first-team all-conference honors last year as a freshman, jump-started that stretch with a one-hander in the lane and a long-range jumper from the right wing in transition. The Terriers built a 37-20 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Boston U. pushed out to a 26-point margin. Cashman, a 6-foot-2 junior, scored on the right baseline and made a turnaround shot, before Alford canned a jumper in the lane off an inbounds pass. The Great Danes closed the gap to 67-55 with under four minutes left when Ebone Henry hit a jumper and three foul shots after being fouled on a 3-point attempt. But BU used the free throw line to stay comfortably ahead.
"We usually start off quick and aggressive," UAlbany coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson said. "But they came out and hit early shots and we backed off defensively. It has to be the other way around."
Mo Moran added 12 points for the Terriers, who shot 50 percent and made 26-of-52 from the field. Boston U. has strung together seven consecutive wins in this series. UAlbany's Henry had 19 points and eight rebounds. Julie Forster added her sixth double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Cassandra Callaway scored 11.
