Women's Soccer Drops America East Conference Opener to Stony Brook at Varsity Field

Albany, N.Y. - Colleen McKenna and Tess Hagenblock each scored a goal from outside the box and Chelsea Morales registered her first career shutout in leading Stony Brook to a 2-0 victory over UAlbany in the Great Danes' America East Conference opener on Thursday, Sept. 30 at Varsity Field.
UAlbany outshot Stony Brook, 11-6, in the first half and maintained possession for most of the frame. However, the Seawolves scored the only goal over the first 45 minutes of play when McKenna, who was named the squad's player of the game, took a short pass from Dominique Adamo on the right side and fired a shot to the far post from just outside the box in the 22nd minute. The Great Danes appeared to tie up the match minutes before the break, as Katie Grant received a pass from Chelsea DeVerna and blasted the ball past Morales from 10 yards away. However, the junior was whistled for being offside.
Trailing 1-0 at the break, UAlbany made several attempts to knot up the score in the second frame. Shayla Bergeron, the team's leading scorer, ran down the right side and received a through ball from Maggie DeVerna in the 56th minute. Morales charged out and did just enough to force Bergeron to shoot the ball wide of the net. Later in the half, Kendra Harrell-Vigil, who was named the team's player of the game, sent a free kick into the box. Katie Dunn got to the ball first among a scrum of players from both teams and sent a pass back to Chelsea DeVerna, but the sophomore's shot was saved by a diving Morales.
Stony Brook (2-7-2, AE 1-0-1), which defeated UAlbany by an identical 2-0 score in the first round of the America East Tournament last year, got insurance in the 78th minute to remain unbeaten in conference play. Habenblock took a short pass from Caitlin Pfeiffer and lobbed a shot from the top of the box over the outstretched hands of Dani Britt to seal the final outcome.
UAlbany outshot Stony Brook, 20-15, and held a 1-0 advantage in corner kicks. Breanna Maggio started the match for the Great Danes and suffered the loss after making four saves on 12 chances. She was replaced in the 58th minute by Britt, who turned away one of the three shots she faced. Morales stopped nine of the 20 shots she saw to earn the shutout victory for the Seawolves.
UAlbany (5-6-0 AE 0-1-0) returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 3 when it visits Hartford at 2 p.m.
