Duquesne Upends UAlbany, 28-17, in Northeast Conference Football Opener at Rooney Field

Pittsburgh, Pa. - Larry McCoy rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns in leading Duquesne to a 28-17 victory over UAlbany in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams on Saturday, Sept. 25 at Rooney Athletic Field.
McCoy, a sophomore running back, scored his second touchdown on a one-yard blast up the middle with 10:41 left in the third quarter as his team pushed out to a 28-14 advantage. The series started when UAlbany quarterback Dan Di Lella's pass bounced off receiver Ryan Kirchner's hands and cornerback Dionte Wade came up with the interception. Duquesne's Connor Dixon, who transferred from Michigan State and moved from quarterback to wide receiver last year, made two catches to set up McCoy's TD. He hauled in a 26-yard pass between the cornerback and safety and then made a leaping grab over a UAlbany defender for 18 additional yards. Dixon finished with seven receptions for 79 yards.
After a partially blocked punt by safety Jake Ciccarello, the Great Danes settled for Herb Glass' 40-yard field goal with 3:57 left in the third period. UAlbany (1-2, NEC 0-1) was looking for more off special teams, but Ciccarello was whistled for a roughing-the-punter penalty against back-up punter Aaron Fleck on Duquesne's next possession.
The Dukes' defensive unit rose to the occasion in the final quarter. The Great Danes went three-and-out to start the period, but then went to work on their next drive. Di Lella, who completed 14 of 37 attempts for 116 yards, hit Kirchner with a first-down pass to the Duquesne 39. But the 6-foot-5 quarterback threw four consecutive incomplete passes to end the threat. Defensive end Alex Inda basically wiped out UAlbany's final series with a third-down sack.
"We just didn't get the job done," said Di Lella, whose team dropped its conference opener for the first time since 2005. "We never had that one play that set things in motion. There was a good play here and there, but no sustained series. Their defense made some plays."
In the first half, the contest featured big plays coupled with miscues on defense and special teams. A fumble by UAlbany's Andrew Smith on a third-down run led to Duquesne's first score. McCoy rumbled over the left side to the end zone on a 25-yard run in a fourth-and-inches situation. The Great Danes answered with a 15-play, 66-yard march. Smith, who rushed for 63 of his 92 yards before the intermission, reached paydirt on a 3-yard blast over left guard.
The Dukes answered in the second quarter with a pair of touchdowns that were set up by big strikes in the pass game. Sean Patterson, who threw for 242 yards on 13-of-22 through the air, connected with wideout Dave Williams in the right flat and the Michigan State transfer raced up the sideline on a 65-yard scoring play. After a UAlbany punt, Duquesne (3-1, NEC 1-0) put together a 10-play, 83-yard drive that moved the lead to 21-7. Fullback Marek Lapinski capped the sequence with a one-yard blast. However, Akeem Moore's 45-yard pass-and-run reception was the key play on third-and-two from the Duquesne 25.
UAlbany later progressed into Duquesne territory, but the movement was deflated when linebacker Segre Kona picked off Di Lella's third-down pass. However, the Great Danes' defense stiffened and defensive end Marc Wargo broke through to block Charlie Leventry's punt attempt. Defensive tackle Ocieka Bakou fell on the ball at the Duquesne 9, and Smith scored three plays later on a 3-yard run to close the gap to 21-14 by halftime.
"Their run sets up the pass well," offered UAlbany defensive end Mike Kelly, whose team lost for the first time in four meetings with Duquesne. "They got out (to a lead) early on us and hit us with some big plays. We had several three-and-outs on defense, but when you convert long passes on third down that takes the steam out of you."

Paw Prints:  UAlbany had won nine of its previous 11 Northeast Conference openers, including four in a row ... the Great Danes lost for just the second time in seven games played after a bye week as a Division I FCS program ... DE Eddie Delaney tied a career-high with nine tackles, while FS Justin Hassan also made nine hits, a career-best ... WR Ryan Kirchner turned in a career game with seven receptions for 77 yards ... Duquesne forced three turnovers and had no miscues ... the Dukes won for the first time in the series, which dates back to UAlbany's 24-0 victory in the 2002 ECAC Classic.
