Boston, Mass. - Jessica Luscinksi and Kylie Strom each netted a goal in the last 10 minutes of regulation to lead top seed Boston University to a 2-0 victory over fourth-seeded UAlbany in the semifinal round of the America East Conference Championship on Sunday, Oct. 31 at Nickerson Field. The Terriers advance to meet Maine, the sixth seed, in the championship match on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m.
Boston U. (15-5) held a 12-1 shot advantage in a scoreless first half, but UAlbany's strong back line consisting of Casey Marks, Kendra Harrell-Vigil, Katie Norwood and Amy Harrison was able to keep the match deadlocked at 0-0. Goalkeeper Breanna Maggio also made four saves, as the Great Danes became the first America East team to keep the Terriers off the scoreboard heading into the recess this season.
After sending a flurry of shots at Maggio in the second half, the Terriers eventually broke through when Luscinski lobbed a free kick towards the far post that hit off the crossbar before landing in the back of the net in the 81st minute. Just 1:58 later, Strom added insurance and capped the scoring by chipping the ball past Maggio after receiving a pass from Tiya Gallegos.
"I think we came out ready to play and that we had our chances to get into our attacking third in the first half," said fifth-year head coach Mary-Frances Monroe, who piloted the program to its first winning campaign since 1988. "The great part is that all of {our players} are going to be back next season. {Kristin Shaw and I} told the girls that they train hard every day and that we are excited to get every single one of them back {next year}."
Boston U., which has won seven of the last 10 America East tournament titles, outshot UAlbany (10-8-2), 31-1 and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. UAlbany's Maggio made a season-high nine saves on 31 chances in the losing effort. Kelly King started the match for Boston U. and faced one shot. She was relieved by Alice Binns in the second half, who did not face any shots and was credited with the victory.
"We are just going to continue to build for the future from here on out," added Monroe. "I think the team had a fantastic season. They should keep their heads up and be proud of themselves."
Paw Prints: UAlbany, which was making its first appearance in the semifinal round of the America East Conference Championship, kept Boston University off the scoreboard longer than any other league opponent had this season before Jessica Luscinski netted the eventual game-winning goal in the 81st minute ... The Great Danes are slated to return all 22 of their players next season, including six who have earned all-conference laurels ... Fifth-year head coach Mary-Frances Monroe guided the squad to its first winning season and highest win total since finishing with a 10-6-2 ledger in 1988.
