Football Falls in OT When Defending Northeast Conference Champions Rally in Final Half

Albany, N.Y. - Placekicker Joe Izzo connected on a game-winning 32-yard field goal, his third of the game, as Central Connecticut State rallied for a 30-27 overtime victory over Albany on Friday, Oct. 22 at University Field. The Blue Devils remained unbeaten in Northeast Conference play and remained in a virtual tie for first place in the league standings.
Central Connecticut State (5-2, NEC 4-0) trailed by eight points in the final minutes, but drew even with an eight-play, 74-yard drive. UAlbany (3-4, NEC 1-3) seemed to have the defending conference champions stopped in their own territory before a fourth-down defensive holding call kept the series alive. Quarterback Gunnar Jespersen took advantage with a 24-yard completion and an 11-yard first-down run. He later found P.J. Borawski on a 9-yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds remaining. Everette Benjamin then took an option pitch and cut inside the left pylon on the tying two-point conversion.
In overtime, UAlbany quarterback Buddy Leathley scrambled for a first down but fumbled at the CCSU 13 where linebacker Lorenzo Baker scooped up the loose ball. The Blue Devils, who posted their fourth consecutive victory, ran three straight times to set up Izzo's winning kick.
"This is probably the toughest loss in my career," UAlbany outside linebacker Chris Blais stated. "We had a comfortable lead, but they battled back. I bumped into (linebacker) Jon Morgan on the underneath route, plus we had two penalties and some missed tackles on that last drive."
The Great Danes built a 24-6 halftime advantage behind Leathley's running and throwing. Sophomore tailback Andrew Smith, who rushed for 83 yards, scored from seven yards out on his team's first possession. Leathley, a redshirt freshman making his first career start, later scrambled 25 yards from the pocket and followed with a 20-yard touchdown dash for a 14-3 lead with 2:33 left in the first quarter.
Still leading 17-6 in the second period, Leathley directed his team on an 11-play drive to the end zone. He found wide receiver Ryan Kirchner on a 9-yard slant pattern to cap the sequence with 1:04 left before the intermission. Leathley completed 12 of 19 passes for 101 yards and carried 17 times for 112 more on the ground.
"We did some good things," Smith offered. "Leathley played a helluva game and he looked like a veteran out there. We believe in him. But this hurts. We are still a young team and we have time to learn and time to get better."
Benjamin helped Central Connecticut State mount its comeback in the second half. He scored on a 9-yard run midway the third quarter to complete a 13-play, 84-yard march. A 6-foot-2, 225-pound senior, Benjamin added another touchdown with 5:38 left in the final stanza when he darted off right tackle 12 yards to paydirt. The Hofstra transfer reached the century mark for the fifth time this season by rushing 32 times for 159 yards.
The Great Danes, who dropped a two-point thriller at Central Connecticut State last year, appeared to regain control when they recovered an onside kick and were aided by a catch interference penalty. Smith caught a first-down pass and rushed four times during the series to set up Herb Glass' 38-yard field goal and a 27-19 lead with 2:07 to play.
"It's heartbreaking," said Leathley, the first freshman to start at quarterback for UAlbany since the 2006 campaign. "I should have held on to the ball. We had good flow. In the second half, they played solid defense. They are good, athletic team."
Jespersen, who is in his first year as CCSU's starting quarterback as a junior college transfer, passed for 154 yards on 14-of-29 passing. He also ran for 68 yards in a contest that was decided on the lone turnover in the contest.

Paw Prints:  UAlbany played in its fourth overtime game and first-ever at University Field ... the Great Danes have dropped three of four contests that have gone to extra periods as a Division I FCS program ... UAlbany played a home Friday game for the first time since the 1998 season opener, also against Central Connecticut State ... Buddy Leathley (112) and Andrew Smith (103) each accounted for more than 100 all-purpose yards ... ILB Jon Morgan (13) and DE Mike Kelly (11) each registered career-highs in tackles ... the OT thriller was televised on MSG-Plus, Fox College Sports, Cox Cable and CTSN by the NEC Television Network.
