Men's Soccer Falls to UMBC in America East Play; Tjerk Veltman Nets First Career Goal

Albany, N.Y. - Levi Houapeu netted two goals and Andrew Bulls added a pair of assists on free kicks in leading UMBC to a 3-1 victory over UAlbany in America East Conference men's soccer match on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at Varsity Field.
UMBC (6-3-2, AE 1-0-2), the league's top-scoring offense, got two quick goals in the opening 15 minutes and never looked back. The Retrievers took advantage of a free kick attempted by Bulls from just outside the box in the 12th minute to get on the board. The reigning America East striker of the year bended a shot that went through a sea of players from both teams before finding the foot of Welsh, who tapped the ball into the right corner of the net. Just 3:06 later, the visitors doubled their lead heading into the break when Houapeu cashed in on a penalty shot after being taken down in the box by a Great Dane defender.
The Retrievers got all the insurance they would need just 1:16 after halftime on another free kick taken by Bulls from just outside the box in the middle of the field. Instead of attempting to shoot the ball over a wall of UAlbany defenders, the junior made a short pass to Houapeau, who came darting through from the left side and finished with a hard shot that landed in the back of the net.
UAlbany made an attempt to rally and broke through in the 76th minute when Tjerk Veltman collected a long pass from Jeff Pierre and beat goalkeeper Dan Louisignau with a low shot to the far post. It was the sophomore's first career goal. A few minutes later, Shaun Kane almost cut the Retriever lead down to a single goal when he came charging in on an unprotected Louisignau. However, the goalkeeper did just enough to disrupt the captain's shot at the open net from the right corner of the box. UAlbany earned multiple free kicks in their offensive third over the last 15 minutes of regulation, but the squad could not capitalize on any of its chances before time ran out.
The Great Danes outshot the Retrievers, 18-15, and had a commanding 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Christian Mejia, who earned a spot on the Puerto Rico National Men's Soccer team and represented his country at the Digicel Caribbean Cup earlier this month, made his first collegiate start for the Great Danes. He turned away four of the 14 shots he faced and suffered the loss. The junior was relieved midway through the second half by Scott Kessler, a transfer from Marist, who faced one shot when he came out of the net and forced Pete Caringi to sail the ball wide of the goal on a breakaway opportunity. UMBC's Louisignau made six saves on 18 chances to earn the victory.
UAlbany (4-8-0, AE 0-3-0) continues its four-game homestand when it entertains Binghamton at Varsity Field on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m.
