Albany, N.Y. - Patrick Boucher netted his first goal of the season midway through the first half to lead Hartford to a 1-0 win over UAlbany in the America East Conference men's soccer opener for both schools on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field. Goalkeeper Adrian Foncette recorded his third double-digit save performance of the year to keep the Great Danes in the match until the final whistle.
After his crafty, arching shot barely went over the crossbar and landed in the top of the netting, Boucher cashed in on his second opportunity to give the Hawks all the insurance they needed. Ivan Guarin took a hard shot from 20 yards out which was saved by a diving Foncette. The rebound came right to the foot of Boucher, and the sophomore capitalized to put the visitors ahead.
Hartford (4-5-1, AE 1-0-0) came extremely close to doubling its lead in the 35th minute by taking three shots on goal in a span of about eight seconds. Kevin Hall had the ball just outside the box and fired a shot which a charging Foncette saved from just a few yards away. Andreas Blamo immediately took the rebound and made a bid to put the Hawks by two, but Foncette retreated quickly enough to make another stop. Blamo took his own rebound and took aim at the open net. However, Ian Peach dove in front of the ball just in time and was credited with a team save by kicking it out of bounds to force a corner kick. Foncette ended the half with eight saves.
The Hawks came storming out in the second half and almost scored in the opening seconds. Carlos Villa, who led America East in goals scored last season took a cross from the right side and only had Foncette standing in his way. The goalkeeper, who broke the Division I program record for saves in a single match earlier this season, disrupted the play just enough to force the senior to shoot just high and hold the Hartford lead to one. The Great Danes moved the ball down the field and created more scoring chances in the second stanza, but the stingy Hawks defense stole the ball away on several occasions while limiting the home team to just four shots, which all went high or wide, in the final 45 minutes.
Hartford outshot UAlbany, 23-11, and also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks in the match. Foncette, who has logged in every minute in the cage for the Great Danes this season, turned away 10 of the shots he faced in the losing effort. Nenad Cudic stopped two shots to earn his third shutout of the season for the Hawks.
UAlbany (0-8-2, AE 0-1-0), which had its five-game unbeaten streak against Hartford snapped with the loss, continues America East play at Binghamton on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. The Bearcats were the only America East school to beat the Great Danes last year, and most notably ended UAlbany's season with a 1-0 double-overtime win in the semifinal round of the league tournament at Varsity Field.
