Men's Soccer Drops 5-1 Decision to America East Conference Opponent UMBC in Baltimore

Baltimore, Md. - Levi Houapeu recorded his second hat trick of the season and set up the game-winning goal to lead UMBC past UAlbany, 5-1, in an America East Conference men's soccer match on Saturday, Oct. 24 at the UMBC Soccer Stadium.
The Retrievers, who have been ranked as high as 18th in the NSCAA/adidas national poll, got on the scoreboard in the 16th minute when Houapeu sent the ball to the left corner of the net on a crafty three-way passing play. Andrew Bulls, the nation's leading scorer, and Mark Lubetkin were credited with the helpers.
Houapeu factored into two more goals in a span of 2:33 to help his team take a 3-0 advantage before halftime. In the 32nd minute, the sophomore's cross inside the box was placed inside the right post from 12 yards away by Dustin Dzwonkowski. Shortly afterwards, Houapeu took a service from Bulls and blasted a shot past goalkeeper Adrian Foncette.
UMBC (12-3-0, AE 3-2-0), which entered the week ranked fourth nationally in goals per game, added to its advantage when Houapeu netted his third marker of the match in the 58th minute. The forward took a pass from John Paul Waraksa and finished from 10 yards out.
UAlbany (0-12-3, AE 0-5-1), which erased a two-goal halftime deficit and earned a 5-4 win when the teams met at Varsity Field last season, made an attempt to rally in the 70th minute when Ian Peach punched in a loose ball following a corner kick taken by Anthony DeSalvo. Dzwonkowski's second tally of the match in the 82nd minute sealed the final outcome.
UAlbany's Foncette, who has logged in every minute in goal this fall, made six saves on 20 chances in the losing effort. UMBC's Paul Saunders turned away one of the nine shots he faced to earn the victory. He was relieved by Miguel Calderon, who stopped one of the two shots he saw in the final 20 minutes of the match.
The Great Danes wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 31 when they host defending-champion Boston University at 2 p.m. Seniors Claudio Dantas and Joe Hogan will be recognized for their contributions to the program prior to the match.
