Men's Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision to America East Leader New Hampshire at Varsity Field

Albany, N.Y. - Chris Banks scored his sixth goal of the season in the 78th minute to lead New Hampshire to a 1-0 victory over UAlbany in America East Conference men's soccer action on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at Varsity Field.
     UAlbany (0-11-3, AE 0-4-1), which held a commanding 14-6 advantage in total shots through the first 45 minutes, almost got on the board in the 11th minute. After Milos Jankovic's free kick from 40 yards away was bobbled by goalkeeper Colin O'Donnell, Claudio Dantas made a bid at the open net by firing a header. However, a Wildcat defender cleared the ball away just before it could cross the goal line.
     New Hampshire (8-5-1, AE 5-0-0), which has two wins over nationally-ranked programs this season, had its best chance of the opening half in the 40th minute when Banks broke loose down the middle. However, his aim for the back of the net was slightly disrupted by defender Konner McNamara, allowing Adrian Foncette to make the key save to keep the match scoreless heading into the recess.
     While the second half was played more in the middle of the field, the Wildcats got all the insurance they needed when Banks took a short pass from Alex Russell and sailed a shot from the top of the box past the outstretched hands of Foncette. Ian Peach's chance to net the equalizer in the waning seconds was saved and held by O'Donnell, and the visitors survived to stay unbeaten in conference play.
     UAlbany's Foncette made six saves on 13 chances and suffered the loss. O'Donnell stopped seven of the 23 shots he faced for New Hampshire to earn his fifth clean sheet of the season.
     The Great Danes continue conference play when they travel to face UMBC on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
