Women's Soccer Falls to Defending America East Champion Boston University at Varsity Field

Albany, N.Y. - Freshman defender Jessica Morrow scored her first two career goals, including the tally which stood as the game-winner, to lead Boston University to a 3-0 victory over UAlbany in America East Conference women's soccer action on Sunday, Oct. 11 at Varsity Field.
After both teams failed to penetrate the opposing defenses at the start of the match, the Great Danes found a hole and had the first good scoring opportunity for either side in the 20th minute. Chelsea DeVerna, who leads all America East freshmen in scoring, took a through ball from Despina Psomopoulos and only had goalkeeper Janie Reilly to beat. She fired a shot from the top of the box, and the senior turned it away with her right leg to keep the match scoreless.
Boston U. (9-4-2, AE 5-0-0), which extended its unbeaten streak against America East opponents to 21 matches with the win, took advantage of a free kick at midfield to get on the board. Casey Brown, the league's two-time reigning defensive player of the year, sailed the ball into the box. Adrienne Anderson headed it over to Morrow, and the freshman tapped in her first career goal past UAlbany's Cate Crenson from six yards away in the 28th minute. The Great Danes dodged a bullet when Jessica Luscinski had a shot hit the crossbar, and Crenson made a point-blank save against Krista Minto in the 38th minute to keep the lead at one heading into recess.
The Terriers, who have made four straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament, doubled their lead in the opening minutes of the second stanza when Emily Pallotta headed in a cross from Luscinski. UAlbany (6-7-1, AE 1-2-1), which has already eclipsed its highest single-season win total as a Division I program, had a chance to cut the deficit in half the same way the visitors scored their first goal when the squad was awarded an indirect kick from about 30 yards away. Jenna Burke sent the ball to the top of the box, and Maggie DeVerna headed it across for Kendra Harrell-Vigil to punch in. However, the ball sailed out of bounds before the sophomore defender could get to it. Boston U. sealed the outcome when Morrow hammered a header to the far post off a corner kick taken by Farrell McClernon in the 76th minute.
UAlbany's Crenson made a career-best 11 saves on 26 chances and was credited with the loss. Reilly stopped three of the seven shots she faced to record her league-leading fifth shutout this year for Boston U.
The Great Danes, who suffered their first loss of the season by multiple goals, return to action when they travel to UMBC on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 3:30 p.m.
