UAlbany Women's Soccer Edged in America East Home Opener by Binghamton, 2-1

Albany, N.Y. - Lisa Campbell's first career goal midway through the first half lifted Binghamton to a 2-1 victory over the UAlbany women's soccer team in the America East Conference home opener for the Great Danes on Thursday, Oct. 1 at Varsity Field. Chrissy Klepper scored her second goal of the fall to lead the way for UAlbany, which suffered its first loss in league play and its sixth one-goal defeat of the season.
Binghamton (4-4-1, AE 1-1-0), which has made four appearances in the semifinal round of the league tournament in the last five years, scored on the first shot attempt of the match by either team. Dani Raske took a through ball from Jamie Holliday and went in all alone on an unprotected Breanna Maggio to put the Bearcats on the board in the third minute.
UAlbany (5-6-1, AE 0-1-1), which has already matched its highest win total as a Division I program, answered right back just 1:25 later to tie the match at one goal apiece. Katie Grant came flying down the sideline and crossed the ball to Klepper at the top of the box. The sophomore then pounded it over Binghamton goalkeeper Jen McEachron for her second goal of the season.
After the Great Danes' Ashley Tirabassi misfired on consecutive attempts, the Bearcats regained their one-goal advantage in the 21st minute. With a Great Dane defender trying to hold her back, Campbell won a 50-50 ball at the top of the box against Maggio. Her first aim at the net was saved by the freshman goalkeeper, but she took her own rebound and scored her first career goal on the open net.
UAlbany made a bid to tie the match up for the second time in the 35th minute. Defender Jaclyn Rosada came up on the right sideline as an extra attacker, and slipped a pass over to Despina Psomopolous. Psomopoulos fired a shot from 12 yards that went over the outstretched hands of McEachron, but it hit the crossbar and bounced out. Klepper tried to control the rebound, but her bid to net her second goal of the half was blocked and forced a corner kick, which the Great Danes could not capitalize on. After dodging a bullet, the Bearcats went into the break clinging to their one-goal advantage.
Binghamton came out flying in the second half and almost doubled its lead in the second minute. A cross from the left corner which made its way through a jam of players from both teams eventually made it to the foot of Holliday at the edge of the six-yard box. However, her shot on the open net was blocked by Grant and went out of bounds.
UAlbany had its first major opportunity of the second stanza to tie the match and possibly force overtime in the 79th minute. Rebecca Lee sent the ball down to Maggie DeVerna at the top of the box. Goalkeeper Erin Inman, who started the second half, came up to try to disrupt the play, forcing DeVerna's arching shot to land in the top of the netting. Despite having their chances by earning seven of the match's eight corner kick opportunities, including four in the second half, the Great Danes could not net the equalizer before time expired.
Maggio made seven saves on 16 chances for UAlbany in the losing effort. McEachron, who got the start in goal for Binghamton, stopped three of the 11 shots she faced and earned the victory. Iman turned away one of the five shots she saw in the second half.
The Great Danes, who have lost all of their matches by a single goal, continue America East play when they travel to New Hampshire on Thursday, Oct. 8 for a 3 p.m. match.
