Women's Basketball Edged By Colgate's Second-Half Rally in 48-46 Non-Conference Loss

Hamilton, N.Y. -- Sophomore guard Sami Kozlowski made the go-ahead basket with 35 seconds remaining, as Colgate rallied for a 48-46 non-league victory over UAlbany on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at Cotterell Court.

The Raiders, who were playing their third game in five days, came back from a 43-31 deficit midway through the second half.  Colgate (2-4) ripped off 12 unanswered to draw even while holding the visitors scoreless for more than seven minutes.  Katie Garman and Candice Green canned back-to-back three-point field goals to close the gap to 43-41.  Patricia Oakes then tied the contest with a pair of free throws after collecting an offensive rebound.

UAlbany (0-5) regained the lead, 46-43, on a three-point play by freshman Tabitha Makopondo, who was fouled by Garman as she converted a right baseline drive.  However, Oakes, a 6-foot-4 freshman who had 16 points, made a one-hander from right of the lane and Kozlowski drilled a 10-footer on the baseline to put their team back in front.

UAlbany's Tiffanie Johnson, who led all scorers with 25 points, missed a jumper in the lane, before Georgia Geir made the first of two foul shots for a 48-46 advantage.  The Great Danes had an opportunity to send the game to an extra period, but Janea Aiken failed to convert an uncontested layup on the right baseline as time expired.

The Great Danes, who are winless through their first five games for the first time since the 2000-01 campaign, came out firing in the opening six-plus minutes by making 9-of-14 from the field en route to a 22-4 cushion.  Johnson, who had 18 first-half points, made a pair of left baseline jumpers to get her team off to a good start.  Aiken and Britney McGee later connected on three-point shots to build the lead to double figures.  Johnson, a senior forward, finished off the outburst with a 3-point from both the right wing and left of the key.

The Raiders were still behind 36-23 early in the final period, but then appeared to get back into the contest with seven straight points.  Green, who scored 10 on 4-of-6 from the floor, buried a three-pointer, before Kozlowski converted a left-hander off the glass to end the run.  Johnson, who posted the highest scoring total by Great Dane in nearly three years by making 10-of-16 field goals, pushed the lead back to double digits with one of her four 3-pointers and an offensive rebound.

McGee finished with nine points for the Great Danes, who shot just 19 percent from the field in the second half on 5-of-26 attempts against Colgate's zone defense.  Geir, a 6-foot-1 sophomore, finished with a game-high 13 rebounds.

“We are at a point where we are having a hard time scoring points,” said head coach Trina Patterson. “We are struggling offensively. Until we find our way and get a couple of our guards as well as our post players to step up, it is going to be tough for us. (However), I think we need to celebrate Tiffanie Johnson's 25 points. We will look to involve her more than we have moving forward. She has shown us that she is ready to play.”
