Kamisha Kellam Leads Volleyball to Undefeated Regular Season in 3-1 Win Over Stony Brook

Albany, N.Y. ? Kamisha Kellam recorded a team-high 17 kills, including the 1,000th of her career, to lead UAlbany to a 3-1 win over Stony Brook in America East Conference volleyball action on Sunday afternoon at University Gymnasium. The Great Danes, who won their 14th straight match, finished the conference regular season undefeated for the first time in program history. UAlbany dropped the first set, 23-25, but rallied back to win the final three with scores of 27-25, 25-20 and 25-9.

UAlbany jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the opening set, but Stony Brook (12-18, AE 3-9) rallied back to tie the set at 10 apiece on a kill by Gulce Nazli Dikecligil. The Seawolves jumped out to a 12-10 advantage on a service ace by Dikecligil, but freshman Kalyn Mostert served for five straight points to put the Great Danes back on top, 15-12. Stony Brook tied the set once again at 16-16 on a UAlbany attack error. The teams exchanged points, with a Kellam kill setting the score at 23-all late in the set. Back-to-back kills by Jessica Graham and Alicia Nelson sealed the first-set win for the Seawolves.

Stony Brook took an early 5-1 lead in the second set on a service ace by Jamie Watson. The Great Danes ended the rally with a kill by Hillary White, followed by a Kellam kill in the middle to pull within 5-3. The Seawolves continued to build an advantage, getting up 10-5 on a kill by Dikecligil. Stony Brook built up a 16-12 lead with a kill by Nelson, but Mostert served for four consecutive points to help put the Great Danes back on top 18-16. The Seawolves drew even at 21-all, and the teams went back and forth up to match point. Stony Brook had a chance at set point, but UAlbany was able to hold them off with a kill by White to tie the set at 25-25. The Great Danes induced a Stony Brook attack error and Kellam smashed a kill on an overpass to end the set.

The pivotal third seesawed back and forth to start, as Dikecligil tied the set at 6-6 with a kill. After a Kellam kill put the Great Danes on top 13-10, Stony Brook rallied back to pull ahead 15-14 on a UAlbany attack error. Kellam recorded back-to-back solo blocks to put the Great Danes up 17-15 before Kelsey Sullivan recorded a kill for Stony Brook to get within one. After UAlbany pulled ahead 23-18 behind Cate Eckhardt's service game, the Great Danes had two set point attempts before Kellam recorded the set-ending kill for the second time.

UAlbany came out firing in the final set, as setter Brooke Stanley served for the set's first 11 points. Eckhardt was involved in the first four points, combining for a block assist with White and Mostert before recording three straight kills. Stanley had one service ace in the rally, which ended with a kill by Stony Brook's Lindsey Gordon. The Seawolves got within 13-5 before a Mostert kill put the ball back in UAlbany's hands. White served for three points to put the Great Danes up 17-5. After a kill by Kellam gave UAlbany a 21-8 advantage, Laura Livergood served for three points, inducing three straight attack errors by Stony Brook. Dikecligil recorded a kill on UAlbany's first match point to try to give the Seawolves a chance, but White drove a kill into the front row to end the match.

Amanda Cowdrey and White both finished with nine kills while Stanley recorded a match-high 42 assists, nine digs and three kills. Laurie Gonzalez led the team defensively with 13 digs while Cowdrey finished with 12 digs and two service aces. Nelson led the Seawolves with a match-high 19 kills. Dikecligil and Michelle Burrola both recorded 11 digs.

UAlbany (20-8, AE 12-0) became just the third America East team since 1998 to record an undefeated conference record. New Hampshire posted a 14-0 slate that season, while Hofstra went 16-0 in 2000, the program's final campaign as a conference member. UAlbany, which sealed up the top seed in the conference tournament last weekend, will host the America East Championship for the fourth time in the last five seasons on Nov. 21 and 22.
